Anyone have a Raytheon Ray220 VHF/Hailer mic or the entire radio to sell? Bringing boat south next week, and my mic broke.

Thanks,

Jeff

Found one online, having it shipped to new place in Florida, and borrowing a friends mic for the ride south and will mail it back to him, if he does not come along for the ride.

Thanks.

Hey John, good question. This wind is crazy. I should be ready to leave Friday/Saturday, assuming forecast holds.

My one delay may be buying a life raft. I am planning to purchase a life raft Monday. I have been paralyzed with this decision. Talk about an emotional sale. Sales guy only has to ask one question: How much is your life worth?

I thought I was buying a raft for $2,000 (Revere brand). I am now at $3,500 to $5,000 (Switlik, Winslow or Viking), which is a lot of coin for something I will hopefully never need. Kinda like that umbrella insurance policy many of us pay for every year, and thats just about protecting your money/home, you don’t die.

BUT, this is where the emotion comes in. In the event I do need it, do I want to save $2,500, and in that unlikely event, I drop raft in water, pull painter and worst case nothing happens. The next thing I hear is Ben, my grandfather in heaven, because it sounds better with a Russian/Ukrainian accent: “boytchick, my grandson, you schmuck, you saved $2,500 and now you’re dead, see you in a few hours”.

Jeff

P.S. Any and all unemotional wisdom on life rafts, would be appreciated.

I’d probably want one for that trip too. Probably buy some bright orange hoodies and sweatshirts to wear while I was at it along with an inflatable life jacket. . Especially when making the trip alone.
Too bad you couldn’t rent a life raft.
On the other hand, you’re likely to do more open water boating down there so having the life raft would be a good thing.
BTW: just looked at the Revere Coastal 2.0 online and that one looks like it would serve your purpose.

Got EPIRB?
Spare Radio?
Safe trip!
I would get the raft and the epirb!

IMO

There is nothing wrong with the Revere rafts. If the salesman was suggesting a high failure rate, he was trying to upsell you.

As Dave said, EPIRB, handheld VHF, a backup handheld GPS (Garmin) and flares in a waterproof ditch bag. Also, decent life jackets..

Good luck and enjoy. This will be fun

BTW, my boat is leaving for FL on Thursday. Unfortunately, it will be on RT 95.

Wish I were making the trip like you.

Safe journey.

Safety equipment for trip down I95

- Shotgun
- Pistol
- Knife
- Cell phone with quick access to 911
- Waffle House loyalty card
- Gas-X

John, you can rent them for approx $75/day. Not a bad way to go.

But I will buy, because as you said the Bahamas are screaming at us. My wife mentioned Cuba the other day, hmm, but the Bahamas and the Keys, for sure.

Dave,

LOL.

Epirb and Vhf are in my ditch bag with other essentials.
And I do have some fire power if needed...

And Mark, wish I was following you or vice versa, assuming we cruise at same speed. Should be a great journey! But truck is good option too, especially from a time standpoint. This trip took me 14 days approx 7 years ago, due to weather in Cape May, NC, and other ports. And then there is the possibility of something not working on the boat, which we all know never happens :)

I don't think you're going anywhere this weekend so you have more time to decide on a liferaft :) When I bought mine, after much research I went with Winslow but that was a long time ago and things may have changed.

Besides the initial purchase the inspection and repacking every 2-3 years ends up running about $1000 each time also...

Dave,

LOL. Luckily that's Svensonn's problem.

Svenson's hauled my boat in 2012 from North Carolina. They are really good. Good luck!

It was between Winslow and Switlik, both USA manufacturers. I don’t think you can go wrong with either company. I chose Switlik’s 4 man OPR, One of the deciding factors was, their Life Rafts have a 5 year inspection interval, for $750, so less hassle and lower cost of ownership. Also, they now use compressed air, so their raft has a visual pressure gauge letting you know all is good. I believe this is why they can have longer inspection intervals. There are advantages to having compressed air in cold climates, but I doubt that will ever be an advantage for me.

At the end of the day, most or all of us will never find out how good our life raft choices are, but if we do, lets hope we all made good choices. I think I did - I hope. :)
