New Carver Owner

One item I have overlooked after winterization - make sure the water heater is properly connected and drain plug is closed. Not a major deal but something to look for.

Absolutely! I was going to post a pic, but I need to go back and read a sticky or two to figure out how.

Thanks for the drain plug tip.

One of the bigger challenges when I collect the boat at the port is going to be the re-installation of the radar arch and the windshield. Fingers crossed it'll go smoothly!
 
most boats have a drain plug at the lowest part of the transom, my 44' carver does.

I'll make sure I check for that, thanks. I should have had the broker mail the owners manual etc... to me instead of leaving them on the boat. Oh hindsight...
 
We've had our 1985 Carver 3607 for eight years and it has been absolutly trouble free and other than new canvas and normal maintenance has required nothing in those eight years.
Carvers are good boats if treated and maintained as the fine boats they are.
However, if the boat shows signs of not being well cared for you probably should shy away from it.
Whatever you end up with I hope you enjoy it as much as we have ours.
 
Congrats on your new boat. We bought a used 1999 Mariner 350 several years ago and we still love it. A couple of things you will probably find out for yourself, but I'll cover them anyway. The boat is nose heavy at rest. Sitting slightly bow down, water gathers in the cockpit steps, water will run forward toward the bow and run into the flybride area (we keep the carpet out so it doesn't stay wet), and you can not see the transom when docking stern to. Just takes getting used to. Nothing I would consider trading the boat for. The main AC unit is directly overhead the stateroom and is noisy at first, but we got use to it. These atre great boats, very unique shape, and every inch is useable. Ours has the lighter finished wood interior and looks so much more open and bright than boats with dark wood intetiors (such as Sea Ray, Regal, etc). We spend most weekends aboard and find it works great for us. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours just as much.
 
Thanks again for the welcome and all of the newbie advice. I haven't posted in awhile because I haven't been able to use my boat. It got here in March and we dropped it in the water at the port, slapped on the arch and headed for home. The ride back was extremely adventurous as we ran out of gas on one of the engines and didn't trust the gauge on the other!

So we get the boat parked right outside my apartment in the Marina and put the windshield up as I'm preparing to have it registered as soon as the documents get back from the embassy stateside. The problem is they didn't come back! Well they didn't come back for awhile (months), and when they did come back, they didn't have the proper stamps. Grrr. So in May I hire another company and they completely dropped the ball. Now I'm a very patient person, but this guy kept telling me he'd drop the docs off in 15 minutes but NEVER show up! Then he'd say Saturday at 10am, then it was after dinner, then it was 3pm and so on. Did this to me for over a month. Went to the police who called him and he even promised them he'd bring it the next day (of course he didn't show). It took 3 trips to various police departments and finally a trip to court where I threatened to sue him and his company for all their worth before he magically had the documents couriered over. I found out the reason he kept avoiding me was because he lost a page of my documents, and the rest were in the same state I gave him. No stamps! So it's the end of July and at least I m (almost) back at square 1. Keep in mind I bought this boat in December. After pointless emails, I decided to just call the embassy in the States (Duh!). I actually talked to someone who did the stamping and after a few more rounds of calls I was told to send my documents directly to the embassy. They have it now and are having the US chamber fix a few mistakes (misplaced stamps) and hopefully things will get moving again. Finally some progress...

I said all of that to explain why I haven't been able to use the boat. I've made a few trips to the marina fuel pump and wash down but that's about it. Because the boats sitting idle, I decided to give everything a once over (engines, generator, salon etc...). An expat can make a killing here opening up a marine shop. There's no Crusader rep here and the Kohler rep is a joke. They don't return phone calls etc... as they know they're the only game in town. They're also not even authorized to work in the marina. They managed to give me a quote once, but the marina asked for they're insurance paperwork etc... and they couldn't produce it. They (Kohler) said I'd have to hire another company to lift the generator out of the boat and bring it to them so they can service it, lol. I have a million of these stories. From dropped RADAR domes to botched carpet installations, I've seriously considered starting my own Dubai based business.

Amazingly I'm still sane (somewhat) and will post pics and what not soon.
