I am going to replace both of my engines next month and would like to get some opinions. My 3227 is a 87 the year the 350 went from 2piece seals to one piece. the problem is they must have had a left over 2piece right hand rotation and a new one piece standard rotation. They are both 270 crusaders. If i buy new crusader captain choice carburated it will cost about 16,000 and 20,000 for fuel injected. This is the price picked up so there are other costs even if I do the work myself.Daddyos in Florida has two new engines with fresh water cooling carburated one piece seals ready to drop in for 11,500 any reason I should pay the extra for the crusaders. I could also get the new engines with two piece seals and save another 1,000. I know the two piece engine is 4 bolt. all of your opinions are greatly appreciated. LET THE GAMES BEGIN! (or should i say opinions)

If you plan on keeping the boat, I would go with the injected engines. They make life so much easier. You will get an improvement in consumption and better performance as well. I believe the injected engines are 320hp, so in a 32 convertible, that would be a nice advance in cruising speed. The newer engines are rated to run at higher rpm, so you'll cruise at approx. 3800 instead of 3200 as with the old engines. As far as brand goes...they're pretty much all the same underneath, so do you want blue, red or black in your bilge? And, which would be least expensive and easiest to change out. Motor mounts are different between all three brands, so keep that in mind.

I think i will definately go injected
save money and buy a couple cans of blue paint with the 5,000 in savings
 
willyross - I have the same boat and motors, only 1985. What is wrong with your motors and how many hours? Those $ numbers scare me. Also, if you are going to swap mators, have you thought about electronic ignition as well?
 
I would think that the fuel injected motors should come with electonic with integrated fuel and timing control computer
 
the new engines should be drop ins...no assembly required :-)

I have 1000 hours on the original engines but i don't think they were very well taken care of. When I bought the boat last year, I knew at the time if I had to replace the engines it was still a good deal. I could fix the reverse rotation motor for a lot less money but I always wanted a 3227 and if I am going to fix it, I might as well do it right. I am also going to put new transmissions in it while I am at it. Who knows maybe I will get another 20 years. This time they will be maintained.
 
Going with complete engines also means all new starters, alternators, heat exchangers, oil coolers and ALL NEW HOSES !

Makes lots of sense.

willysross...you'll have to get transmissions...new engines are only made in one rotation with the transmission reversing direction on the stbd(?) engine. Your engines were manufactured in clockwise and counter-clockwise rotations, so the trannys are cw and ccw as well. The new trannys are engineered to run efficiently in either direction.
 
Is it not possible at all to get counterrotating GM engines anymore, then???
 
I don't believe so..MAYBE in carbureted, but I don't think so. Crusader used to have a line of "old style" engines, but they stopped those a few years back...it just costs too much to make them both ways, especially when the trannys can spin both directions.
 
I was on the Crusder website the other day and it looks like they still offer counter rotation engines.
 
What exactly makes a CR engine different??? Obviously the camshaft, the starter and distributor gears, but what else???
 
Crusader quoted an extra 1,000 dollars for the reverse rotation with mpi. michigan motors also offers it. Mercruiser no longer offers it.

The difference is the cam, starter and distributor
 
waterpump and impeller pump are the same...the items you quoted are about it.
 
Thanks, Ram! I spoke with someone who distributes Crusader engines at the NY Boat Show today and yes, they do offer RH and LH engines - the counterrotating engine is about $1500 more expensive than standard rotation, though...
 
With all of this said
Since the counter rotation is phasing out and i was going to replace that tranny should I take the money for the Counter rotating motor and put it toward a counter rotating tranny
