NOAA Chart 18661 is now edition 30 dated 3/1/2009.

This is kind of cool. I filed a discrepancy report on chart 18662 regarding Liberty Island flooding in November of 2007. That got the ball rolling and now 18662 has a new edition and the changes are there. Lots of green now shows on Liberty and West Prospect Islands. Here's additional info:

Does anyone know if USCG Auxiliary District 11 or USPS power squadron members were involved in verifying these chart changes locally? I know that the District 11 folks made a number of CU reports during 2008.

Yes. The verification is done by an Auxiliary Member at the Flotilla level. Every January the CG gives them specific locations to verify and report back. It is only after the Auxie's verification report is sent to CG that changes can actually be made. It is a slow process. Who knows how many levels of CG a change has to go through????
 
Thanks to the Auxies for getting the job done. I know NOAA and CG are busy enough updating shipping channel navigation but work in the backwaters makes boating safer and more enjoyable for a lot of people.

One of these days I'm going to take the course and get the gear to join CG Aux and do some of that CU work. I think it would be a blast.
 
It is very worthwhile work and a great way for those who love boating to "give back".

Since the CG now reports to Homeland Security Dept, a background check is required to join the CG Auxiliary. FYI. This allows Auxies to many more activities in support of the CG then before.
 
Background check should be no issue with me unless they read some of my sparring partner's posts in NBR.
 
LOL I think that falls under "Free Speech" and would not disqualify you. But maybe I should warn you that many of the Auxies are to the right politically. However, they cannot represent their political views while in uniform!
 
Thanks for the link to those charts I have spent a lot of time looking at them and almost
immediately wanted to be able to view them full screen and print some sections.

has reformatted all the NOAA files to .PNG files. Believe me this is a really big deal and hard to do.

Anyway if you don't have a good .png picture/graphics viewer then I can recommend "DIMIN

Yeah, the nautical charts are great. You can also take a screen shot from the NOAA viewer on any computer and print that if you just want a chart section.

These NOAA Government Paper Charts are map folded and printed on both sides. They are large enough to read everything on the chart even with red light. I order them direct from NOAA here with no shipping charge. Enter the chart number where it says product search, hit the seach button and you will see the chart come up on a shopping cart.

Purchasing a traditional chart from the government (at the link provided above) will save you $12 in shipping and tax compared to buying the Ocean Grafix POD version of the same chart from the big marine store.
