Hey guys,

I'm a long island guy, but recently took a job in Nyack. I'm looking for a rental as well as a place to keep my boat. If anyone knows any apartments around the nyack area, please let me know. I saw the Haverstraw marina online, it looks like, and it seems to be fairly affordable, any where else I should be looking for a marina?

Dan there are plenty of marinas in the Haverstraw / Stony Point area to consider, and everybody here has thier favorites. I believe any in the Nyack or Piermont area are going to have water issues.

In my opinion, (and it's biased), Haverstraw Marina has the best water depths both on approach and under your boat. It also offers the best storm protection. Pennybridge is also a very good marina. If you look at any of the others in the area, pay very close attention to water levels. Some cannnot be accessed in or out on low tide, and you have to plan your trips accordingly.

I'm sure many others will offer opinions here. Good luck.
 
Pete has it right, you want to check the available depth in each marina -- depending on your boat you might have concerns going out at low tide. It's a great area to boat in, though!
 
You should take a drive up to the Stony Point area, you can visit Haverstraw, PennyBridge, Patsy's Bay and Stony Point Bay marinas in a couple of hours.

Haverstraw does have the best water, but it's too big for my tastes - plus the aluminum docks get too hot for the dogs in the summer.

We have been at PennyBridge for over 10 years and love it. There are some water depth issues (as there are at all the marinas in Stony Point), but the service, staff and fellow boaters make it a great place. If you come up, look for "Hogan" right off the main dock, and say hellow.

I will probably be taking a look around at marinas soon. If you're around Hogan, i'll drop by.

Anyone know of any apartments in the area? I'm still commuting from LI, and it's starting to take it's toll (pun intended) on me.

Went down and looked a few of the marinas the other day. Met the owner or Caryl-D, very nice fellow! Thanks for the all the info and BS-ing with me for a while. Sorry I missed you Hogan, but your boat is gorgeous -- my dream boat one day!

Seems like a great place to boat, and a big change from the south shore of LI!

Thanks! No apartment luck yet. Still looking. I also would like to wait to get an apartment until my house on LI rents. I would love to live-aboard and not rent, but i don't know how feasible that would be up there, but it's a great excuse to buy a bigger boat!

Not a good plan going into winter on the Hudson. I have known people who have done it, and it never works out real well.

This might work better farther South like Liberty Landing, and perhaps Haverstraw (if they will let you) but certainly not up as far as the Rondout. There was a gang that did this for many years up here at the Rondout Yacht Basin.
If you enjoy using a pick, axe, and shovel on a regular basis when it's below zero, or a lack of pump out and water facilities, perhaps this is for you ;). Then there is all of the extra plowing that has to happen to let you park, the extra shoveling YOU will have to do, and a myriad of efforts you will expend to stay on the boat. Then there is the extra humidity aboard that can be challenging.
Me? Never. Not in the Winter up here!

Now if you are talking farther South, and I mean really farther South, it can work quite well.
