New to me 28' Henriques. Boat just came up from Florida. Runs great. Yanmar diesels. Former owner (my dad) recommends fuel polishing before I top off the tanks. Need to find someone that will come to house in Oceanside. Recommendations/referrals anyone? Thanks,

Just curious: Was this boat from Palm Coast, FL? the reason I ask is that there was one for sale here in my neighborhood. Just wondered if it is the same boat.

How do the Racors look? Unlesss the tanks have inspection ports in each baffled section of the tank the fuel really cant be polished. Buy a case of Racor filters, add 50 gal of diesel with the proper additives/biocide & run the boat tilo you use the 50gal +. Pull the filters & see what they look like. Keep repeating until you are satisfied with the way the filters look. Cheaper, more fun & just as effective if yiou do not have inspection ports.
 
Hi Bob, East Coast of FL. It's been in N. Miami Beach for about 10 years.
 
No inspection ports on that boat, unless someone added them after it was built. They have fiberglass tanks 110g each. Andy's got it right just keep changing racors until they stay clean. What year is the boat? I have a 2001 28 Hen.
 
Hi Andy. I thought the same thing. Tanks are accessible to get in through senders but is there really a need? Filters/Racors are clean and I have extras. Have about 10 hours on it since it was splashed in NY. No issues. All good. My dad's still pushing to get the fuel polished before I top it off. If I can find someone and its not unreasonably expensive... Oh wait its a boat. Nothing is unreasonably expensive...

Boaters rule #1 If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Just keep an eye on the racors, you'll be fine.
 
No, No. Diesels recirculate fuel, unless you have really crappy tanks just run with low fuel and change or check filters often for a while it will self clean.

Polishing is a waste of money in most cases. In this case, based on your description of the condition of the filters and how it runs, it would be a total waste of money. I would just carry spare filters and spend the money you would waste on polishing the fuel, on buying more clean fuel.

If you want to polish your own fuel put in the 2 micron Racor elements into your filters and run around in some rough water for a few trips. The flow rate for all micron size Racor elements is the same. The finer ones will just clog up faster.

If your dad still insists on you having the fuel polished, ask him to pay for it. :-)
 
Thanks everyone. Plan is to run it low. Put in 25 gallons a side. Do it again. Change filters and move on. Appreciate the responses. Bill - He said its on him but of course that's not the point. Didn't think it was necessary.

if the filter bowls stay ruby read after sloshing around on a choppy day all is well.
