Bought my first boat last month (20' bowrider), and am looking to go on my first big trip this weekend. I was just curious if anyone had suggestions on places to go on the upper hudson/champlain canal?

All I've really found so far are a couple places mentioned on here a lot (Rondout, Bowline, etc). On another forum someone mentioned "Cucamunga" but they never logged back in to say what/where it was. Is there anything more north?

My marina is just north of Lock 1 on the champlain canal. I'm just looking to do a day trip this time out, so places within say 30-40 miles would be great but am open to any and all suggestions for future plans as well

Any help and advice is really appreciated!

Mike
Some might be willing to go to Block Island in a bow rider ;). Only kidding. Dig around for the history on that.
Anyway presumably you will be trailering and staying in hotels or what?

Here are three great sources of info:

If you're up at Lock 1, take a drive to the Waterford Visitors Center just before Erie Canal lock 1. They will have a ton of literature on places to go/see/sleep/shop, rather than us trying to explain it all here. Then, if you have specific questions, it might be easier for us to narrow things down for you...

The nice thing about Champlain is that there are a lot of B&Bs close enough to the water for you to use. Not so much on the eastern Erie, but there are some...

Overall though, its a WONDERFUL place to boat up there - you'll have a LOT to see and do, and soon you'll be looking for a bigger boat to carry all your stuff around :) !!!

My parents are coming down for the weekend - bringing them out on the boat for the first time... What would you do - where would you go? Keep my boat at Penny Bridge as most of you know ;)

Take them up to Newburgh, you will pass West Point and then Bannerman's Castle (DO NOT go on the east side of Bannermans).

Have lunch at Torches.

On way back head south past Pennybridge and show them all the gorgeous houses along the river in Nyack.

Agree with Mike, the section of the river north of Stony Point is some of the most scenic. You can dock for free at the Torches docks and enjoy a great meal. Try the buffalo calamari and finish off with their creme brulee, both are AWESOME!

Thats about what I was going to say...

When you go to torches dock, you may want to dock on the outside if you are not comfortable with docking yet. The currents run hard up there. They have a really good menu and you can sit outside and eat.

Another option is head south to the piers in New york. Its fleet week so the big ships are in. Bad thing is you cant get within 100 yards of them due to security. You could then stop at striped bass (Tarrytown Marina) and have lunch or Dinner. Being down that far you could go out to the Statue of Liberty as well but it does get choppy so you may want to think about that.

Good advice above, the most senic part of the river is probably between Dunderburgh and Cornwall, if you head north cold spring has a free dock plus resturants just put out fenders it can really rock and roll at that dock.
Butch beat me to it the city is a nice cruise around manhattan, plus feet week would make it nice. happy cruising-Jon

Ryan, just south of Bannerman's Island on the eastside of the Hudson River is a town called Cold Springs. (Heading North past West Point and around the bend on right side). Great places to eat, check out the shops, great walking... Just add it to your list for the Summer.

The westside was crazy this morning... NYPD was setting up and getting ready for Fleet Week. Coast Guard was patrolling the piers.. The ships weren't in as of 8am. I guess my commute home will be madness.

Sorry I left out some details, bear with me i'd just gotten home from a 12 hour overnight shift when I posted...

No hotels or trailers, boat's in a wet slip and has a full camper enclosure

I've spent many summers on my brothers boat in Lake George, and there's the coves to drop anchor in and spend a few hours/the day and the village dock to park at to spend the night at the bars. Was looking for anything along those lines, and couldn't find much on the canal website or BOH beyond free places to dock (nothing much about what's nearby once docked...), and BOH won't send me a confirmation to join their forum

Also any thoughts on the Hudson River Islands park? Does it get crowded pretty quick?

Be very careful just north of West Point, there is a bay between there and Cold Spring (Fopundry Cove)that has a rock that has bent many a prop, shaft and strut. Keep red nun "46" to starboard.

Go north until you are perpendicular to Cold Spring, then head due east to get in there.

Good lookin out Hogan , I forgot to mention that. Stay out of that cove for sure

Someone from SPBM recently had a "close encounter" with that rock.

A close encounter of the worst kind!

(Nope, wasn't me!)

Can't lie I wacked a prop on that sucker many years ago , sometimes there is a marker there , sometimes not-maybe good buisness for the local sea tow who knows
