G'day all,

I'm a 1st time boat owner and new to the Hudson. I've got a 24' Slickcraft - 1976 w/twin Volvo Pentas - The AZAD. I've secured a slip in the Haverstraw Marina.

I've been on boats my whole life (on a lake) yet never have been the proud owner.

My wife and I have two young boys - 4 & 2 1/2 and we are looking for some fun things to do this summer on the river. Places to swim, places to eat, fun things to do, fireworks, etc . .

This seems like a great message board with a bunch of close knit friends - any suggestions or guidance is greatly appreciated.

We should have her in Haverstraw by Memorial day so please stop by - red dock #23.

OK - had some troubles with the initial sign up. I'm now signed up on this profile although I'm having trouble cancelling the old profile.

Hopefully I'm a much better boater than a computer operator!!

Welcome. I am in Haverstraw on Green dock across from where you will be. For starters - Places to swim are Croton adn Bowline. Croton is a beach where has Bowline is a deep pond but very protected.

Welcome to HRCC - you can get tons of info here.

The best place to swim is right across the river from you, at Croton Point. On any given weekend there are hundreds of boats anchored out there. The bottom is sand and the holding is good. Just be careful if you get in too close and the tide goes out!

As for Bowline, there is a submerged brick wall that blocks most of the entrance, don't try going in without someone who knows were it is, and where the channel is. There are no buoys marking it.

Get issues of Boating on the Hudson each month at your marina, it has loads of info. There are fireworks at Bowline on the 4th and Peekskill in mid-August.

There are a number of restaurants on the water - Striped Bass, WI Boat club, Civiles, Viking Boat yard, Crystal Bay, Newburgh.

Plan on trip to the Rondout Creek in Kingston.

I'm usually in Haverstraw at least twice a season. Where can I dock a 60 footer with 5-ft draft & get a fun lunch with a group of friends. Does not have to be fancy but I have about 15 or so friends to bring with me.

Torches in Newbugh is about it IMO. I dont think you will get into Stripped Bass with a 60ft boat. Maybe during the week at high tide.

Last few Haverstraw trips I ended up getting deliveries. Was worse at Stony Point when I had a 47 footer. I pulled in to pick up my friends but I couldn't leave until high tide. Wasted the trip so to speak.

Haverstraw Marina has plenty of depth for your boat - Just no more restaurant.

Rob, exactly right. That's why I can't go to Stony Point but go to Haverstraw. I just can't seem to find places nearby to dock & dine?
Either no depth or not enough dock to fit.

The problem with having a big one is that you can't always find a place to put it!

Art, you must have some sort of tender, take it to Civile's - just south of the Bowline Power plant.

Pat, I'm new to the Hudson as well, am hoping to get my boat up there from south Jersey this weekend. From what i've heard, the 4th of July fireworks in Kingston is supposed to be wonderful (happens the weekend before the 4th if I remember the post correctly). Will see you on the water!

Yeah, I should be that lucky. And yes, I have a great little tender Avon 360DL 40 HP Yamaha. Trouble is it's a pain to take off the bridge, then 4 or 5 trips to the dock. Coming back who's a little light headed or heavy butted :)
I need a TNT Platform or this Freedom Lift but they want $30 grand for a lift. For sure on the next boat.

Pat;

Welcome to HRCC. You won't find a better group of people anywhere. Somedays it may seem as if we are all fighting, but the truth is when the smoke clears we all belong to the same loving family who can fight amongst ourselves.

As Hogan stated, Croton is the best place to swim, and don't worry if the tide goes out all you have to do is be patient, swim a little longer and eventually Mother Nature will set you free. I speak from experience.

On the 4th of July you will see some of the best fireworks available right outside the entrance to Haverstaw at Bowline Park. Please, Please be careful of entering Bowline for the first time, as the most natural route hides the biggest danger. Follow someone in once and then after that it is a blast.

Good luck, and we'll see you on the docks. I'm at Green 70.

Holy Cow!!

Thanks to all for replying!! I look forward to meeting you all in person this summer!!

From now on, I'll be under the BigPat user name (you'll understand once you meet me)

I hope to have pics this weekend as Friday is cleaning day and Saturday is motor day.

Welcome Patrick. Haverstraw is a big place for sure, but as several folks have mentioned already, it has as many great people as it has boats. I'm on Green 21...almost directly across the fairway. One of the great things about Haverstraw Marina is you never have to worry about low tide, there's always plenty of water under your boat. Now...having said that, (and I speak from experience during my first year at Haverstraw), at low tide watch that turn around the end of blue and green docks as you head in or out. If you take it too wide (close to shore) there are a few rocks that would like nothing better than to ruin your day.
Have a great season. I'll catch up with you on the docks sometime.

Hey Pat, welcome aboard. At some point you will want to cruise north to check out the scenery above Bear Mountain, West Point and on up to Kingston. Newburgh has a bunch of river front restaurants, and if you can get away on a Friday or Saturday night there are dancing girls to check out - Butch will tell you more about them later!!!

Oh wait, Butch is supposed to tell you about ponying up $20.00 for the anchor and Pete B will proselytize(yeah, spelling counts) on the benefits of having an anchor and where you can go with it; I would tell you about the dancing girls but with two little kids you are much too young to understand!

Fireworks on the river are great, keep checking back for times and locations....G

Welcome aboard, Patrick.

If your ever headed up toward Albany, be sure to give us a holler.

Geez, thanks George. Get me in trouble already!!!

Pat, welcome to BoaterEd. Let me second the opinion of those who suggest a trip to the northern reaches of the Hudson. That goes for Art with the big boat too - there's deeper water in the creeks up there, and nice restaurants within walking distance in the Rondout and Catskill. Places farther north also...

And don't forget Mariner's in Highland just past the Mid Hudson Bridge...

Pete
Is Hop O Nose Marina still around in Catskill?

We ran up there almost 20 years ago and I remember how beautiful the ride up the Hudson was and how nice the layover was at Hop O Nose
