New to the Hudson

Yes, and they still have a restaurant. Just make sure you have a reservation. (sorry Pete)

But don't ask the staff at Dan's marina if the Hop O Nose restaurant is open as they will send you there even if closed!!!!! Nice ride thou...

Actually John they sold Hop-O-Nose out... By the way, the other marina up there may/may-not have a restaurant going anymore from what I've heard.
If it was up to me there's more in Kgn than Catskill, and you have less to worry about walking around in Kgn than you do in Catskill.

That goes for Art with the big boat too - there's deeper water in the creeks up there, and nice restaurants within walking distance in the Rondout and Catskill. Places farther north also...

And don't forget Mariner's in Highland just past the Mid Hudson Bridge...

How far up North? I'm usually up as far as that Nuburg/Beacon Bridge if I recall that name right? Funny story, I was boarded by USCG right at that bridge. They're asking to see some hull numbers & disposal plan papers etc so I say to the officer "Can you take the helm & I'll go below & get you the documents". Mind you we're holding a position right near the bridge. I get a look like are you crazy, I drive a little skiff. "No way he says this is too big for me" We were 4 couples & we looked at each other like is he joking? This is the Coast Guard? Must have been a weekend sailors. What would they do if I was ill?

You did not have someone rated at piloting. Give the kids a break they are out there trying to do what's right for us. I know it's a pita and we've been boarded every year since 9/11. Sometimes twice in a day!
But all in all they have been good, polite, and efficient.

That being said,
If you stop and the Rondount Yacht Basin in Kgn, and have a dink or take the taxi into town there are a number of good places to eat. Ship To Shore (best), Mariners (eh, but ok), Rosita's (ok) and Armadillo's (ok). There is also a hibachi place that does the fire act at the table.

If you are boarded, once they have tied up to you, your boat is their responsibility. YOu should shut off your engines and let them maneuver your boat with their boat.

Rondout is at least another hour north of Newburgh.

Mike
I have never seen them tie up. They usually just ask for papers to be passed over or they drop someone off on to the boat. Taking adverse actions that are provocative are probably not in your best interest. Don't forget they are the authority and they will tell you what to do. If you abide by their requests things will go much more smoothly.
But if the person has dog sh1t all over their shoes I think it's appropriate to request a wipe or change of shoes.

Every time I have been boarded, they have tied up to me and told me to shut off my engines. I imagine it is for their own safety, so you don't try to take off.

I agree, do whatever they tell you to do, and be nice.

Tied up to me? No tie up. 3 USCG Persons asked & came aboard. Left their small maybe 30ft rescue boat with 2 other guys & drove away? Took a while to look me over as I had to send my wife to all 5 levels (she has bad knees) to make sure everything valuable stays aboard. Meanwhile holding position near a fixed bridge in a down current. Must have taken 40 minutes? Now, I have no problem with the USCG or any gov't agency boarding at any time. I actually like the guys in Law enforcement. But if you're going to do an inspection be understanding. Everybody was polite but there was no understanding why I didn't want 3 guys looking into all the staterooms with no company. My boat is more like a house & I have things like you'd have in your bedroom. Rings, watches etc. I trust everybody but give me a break. Either take the wheel & I'll escort you or one guy goes through the boat with one of mine. Fair? What am I going to say if I'm missing a Rolex later in the day when I finally get to a dock?

Those pesky CG people! Going from boat to boat stealing Rolexs and diamond rings.

Good luck to ya Art...

Hey Dan, any particular reason why you don't mention Steel House? We have reservations for Mother's Day and they have reserved me a slip, were very cordial on the phone as they have been in the past also.

Relative to the USCG boardings, what are you guys doing? We have never been boarded, could it be the music is too loud?!! Or should I just count my blessings....looks like a great weekend coming up....G

We were boarded at the Bear Mt. Bridge on September 13, 2001. 2 days after 9/11. We were returning home from a 5 day trip up the Hudson and were told by the C.G. that NY City was under a state of emergency and we would not be allowed any further south. This was a time of great durress for every member of our military who were responsible for our country's security and yet we were treated with the greatest level of respect and courtesy.

We explained that we were returning to our homeport of Haverstraw, and after a several hour wait, while they checked our I.D.'s we were escourted the remainder of the way to the marina. We were instructed to follow directly behind our escort, and not to deviate from our course. This was all reinforced by the LARGE gun boat that sat at anchor in front on the nuke plant.

The young men and women of the C.G. have always acted proffesionaly and are a welcome site on the waters. Course, now you have me thinking, I never considered whatever happened to my Rolex until today. [:-captain]

Let me help you understand my concerns...Many years ago my office was burglarized. By the time I got there I could clearly see without any doubt just how far the crooks got into the office areas. I was missing electronics from an area in my office that only the cops who responded had acsess to. I am 100% sure the cops robbed me. I will never forget it. It won't happen again.

Hey, give Art a break, he does have a valid point. If he wants the officers to have an escort, that's his business. FWIW, decades ago, a good friend's father died in a horrible accident while cleaning his hunting rifle at home.

My friend's mom, now a widow with three kids never recovered the dad's paycheck the employer was sure he had (cash) when he left an hour before (he went straight home). In fact, he had no money on him which was very unusual.

The Steel House is very good. The locals do not like it for some reason. At night after 10:00 PM it turns into a dance club though. The steaks and food are very good. Ship to Shore is still the best. The Golden Ginsu (hibatchi) and Mariners are good as well

Ahh. got it..

Haverstraw Marina is one of the only marina's that will handle your boat but like Rob said the Resturant burned down a few years ago. There are a few resturants nearby..

Newburgh would be your best bet for a nice Dinner cruise with 4 or 5 quality resturants and plenty of dockage.

BTW. That is a very nice boat you have.. My father loves that boat... Good luck to you.

Sweetness, I'll post a message when I'm going to be in Haverstraw. Bring dad & come on over. The drinks are on the house.
