I bought my '89 32 foot Montego last summer and it had no functioning music. I'm focusing on the cockpit area right now and would like to put in a nice system with good speakers and some power. One of my decisions is about moving forward with a subwoofer (and the required amp). I would like good sound, great bass response, but am an old guy and don't really need a system that produces huge "thumping" and shattering volume. Most of my listening is at the dock (50' from the bar)and usually just cruise on the river. I have heard, however, that an amp and subwoofer will increase even that kind of listening. Any thoughts?

Amount and quality of the power, as well as appropriate quality speakers, determine your listening pleasure.
A weak amp coupled to sub-par speakers will never provide a full spectrum of audio quality.
Even if you never turn the volume up past 1/4, a powerful amp and correct speakers will always provide an aural spectrum wider than a weak amp.
A good amp will allow you to adjust the spectrum to your liking.
Just my opinion from experience. Am not an audio engineer or even an audiophile.

I'm formerly and audio engineer and no question; go for the separate subwoofer with amp. No 6 1/2" speakers will reproduce any frequencies below around 120hz accurately, and the extra power needed for all frequencies below 120hz take up all the power of the system. Our system on our 325AC is a subwoofer and power amp fed by a Sony 4 x 50watt head. 2 speakers in the salon [with bass blockers], and 2 speakers on our back deck fed by the head's own power; it's clear and concise with any type of music, soft or loud. The guy who had the boat before us was a nutjob; 3 power amps for it all. Overkill imho so we got rid of 2 power amps and just kept one for the sub.
Excellent information. I will definitely include a sub in my sound system. Now, should I get a self-powered, amplified sub and just count on a powerful head unit for the rest of the speakers or should I run everything through a full multi-channel amp? I have some 6.5" JLs for the cockpit area and am planing on some larger 8"+ flush-mount speakers in addition for the radar arch (if there is ample room) or good box speakers to mount. I'm told good box speakers sound as good (or better) than the flush mounts, depending on how well the flush mounts were installed.
So, multi-channel amp and run 4 speakers plus sub OR run a good head unit to 4 speakers and use an amplifed sub? I was looking at one of the Fusion series for the head unit. Also, I'd love your thoughts on box and flush mounts.
