Just an FYI that the NY Boat Show is coming up at the Javits Center. I hope to see some of you there. I think I'll be working at the Stingray Boats booth, but there's a possibility I could also be at either Chaparral, Sunsation, or Chris Craft, or running around trying to sell booth space at the Westchester or Danbury shows. So you never know where the heck I'll be!!!

Ah hell, I'm always roaming all over the damn show for a whole week. It would be boating Nirvana if I wasn't actually working there...

We went down to the show today and the crowds were not all that bad. However to get into the Luhr's boats you have to give up your name, address, phone number and various body parts.
So we did not look at Luhr's.
We stopped in at Carver and their new cockpit MY has a decent door into the aft cabin from the cockpit. It looks like it might actually hold up to some water.
Over all it seems the manufacturers are taking taller people into consideration. Hardtops are higher even in the 22-26 foot range. We walked onto the mainship trawler and I whacked my head immediately and we turned around and got off.
But, if anyone is looking for dink let me know. We bought a replacement today. Nothing special in fact it's the same basic boat. Deb wanted electric start so there we are...
We stopped by and looked for you Pete. As you indicated we were swarmed. Nothing to bad, but there was certainly agressive sales(person)ship.
As everyone is well aware, 400k gets you about 35 feet now. New boating is way outside our reach now. I just can't justify it unless I hit the lotto. Let's see... Where's the tickets dear?

John
We are going late Wednesday afternoon. We will look for you. What time do you plan to be there until?

Joe,
We usually like to make the most of it...probably stay until 6:00 or 7:00 pm. Not looking for anything special this year, just sort of a winter picker-upper.

Dan, at least I warned you. The dealers are hungry right now, so you can expect to be talked to by somebody, especially on the smaller boat lines like the ones I sell. On the other hand, most of these guys are pretty friendly and you can actually get into some entertaining conversations with them...

The first time I saw someone with those Luhrs stickers on I thought they worked for Luhrs - hell it had their name and home city on it plus "Luhrs" in big letters. Who's the idiot who thought THAT was a good idea???

I wasn't there at the Show today - Charlie gave me the day off so I took the family to the Botanical Gardens to see the Holiday Train and Gingerbread exhibit. I'll be there tomorrow (Tuesday), mostly roaming around the Show selling space for our February show in White Plains. I am supposed to work down there Friday through Sunday as well...

Sometimes at the shows when multiple dealers are present for one line they want to give you a sticker so that your local dealer is the one who talks to you rather than someone from a different territory. I used to avoid any of the show displays where I had to 'register', but then realized it takes 30 seconds to put my name and town on the card and less than that to say 'just looking' :) Worst case if you put your full address is that you may get a couple brochures in the mail.

I'm going to go to the show either Wednesday or Thursday after work. I'm going to look at radars in case I have to replace mine (started having problems the last couple weeks of the season, sending it back to Furuno to see if it can be repaired for a reasonable price). Otherwise just an excuse to look at boats and gear on a winter night.

John they were enterring the data into a computer. I beleive this was so they could hit you up on a mailing list or otherwise bug you via phone. If they were just putting it on a card I might have gone for it but they were enterring the data immediately.

Oh, I hadn't seen that before. Yep, once the info is on the computer you know you'll be hearing from them...

What's the ZIP on that - I'm at the Show and want to add it to my database...

Well, all of the above is another good reason to come buy a boat from my marina. Our guys will take your name and number too, but likely lose it by the time they get home from the Show [:-mischievous] ...

Hey Pete, good to see you, hope the contact at Formula will pay dividends.

For anyone going, open your eyes wide, its the only way you will see the other two people there when you go! There is no way they can continue this venue with crowds like this. Oh, I use the word "crowd" loosely, there wasn't a single boat from 12 noon until 6PM with a line waiting to board. When you saw groups of people clustered and talking, they were all salespeople. There wasn't one boat which I boarded where a salesperson wasn't immediately available to speak with, and none of them put any pressure on us to buy, it was all very low key so as not to rattle anyone.

I can't wait to see what attendance at Atlantic City is like. Or what the fallout in terms of boat builders is going to be as the industry re-invents itself. Say what you will, the market is saturated - new, used, leftover 06 & 05 - fiberglass has done itself in.

You're right about the attendance, George...

And thanks for the Formula intro - I wrote a message on the "Formula" thread about that but it looks like Passport Marine will be joining us for the Metro Shows in White Plains and possibly Danbury too...

I'm not going to lose any sleep if they ever cancel the Javits. As a matter of fact, I'll get MORE sleep since I haven't had much in the last two weeks getting ready for this !**#&$! show...

Pete I can only imagine. If I am not mistaken most folks that work the show do so based soley on a commission. No sales, no real dollars...

Dan,

The salespeople I know, work on commision with a draw, The all fight to go to the show and only the good or rewarded go to the show, some of them still need to mind the store. I guees it would be better to be at a show rather than minding the store?

Walter

As long as some expenses are covered it can be more interesting. But having done a trade show or two I know they get old fast!

I was there tonight after work and did hear a bell going off 2 or 3 times and plenty of applause (probably from all the dealers) after each time. Not sure who it was selling though... The crowd was definitely sparse, but then again it usually is on a weeknight when I've gone. But probably even fewer people than usual this year. I can't think of any other shows in the area that run all week which probably helps thin out the crowd also. The holiday week can't help either, quite a few people in my office are still away on vacation.

The larger inboard sportfishing boat companies have mostly given up on the show it seems. It's all cruisers or outboard boats now. I wanted to look at radars and Furuno wasn't even there.

John

I may drive down to the show on Saturday. Does anyone have any advice about parking outside Manhatten and taking public tranportation to the Javit's center? The show website isn't very helpful in this regard.

Thanks...

(yet another) Gary

Leave your car at one of the Metro-North stations in CT, take the train to Grand Central Station and then take a bus to Javits.
