New York Boat Show Dec 30 - Jan 7

(yet another) Gary, if you drive down I-91 to I-95 to any of the towns around Norwalk or closer to the city, grab a train to Grand Central Station you will be in top shape. At Grand Central come out to 42nd street and turn left towards the Hyatt Hotel, the shuttle bus picks you up in front and its a free ride to the boat show. When you are done go back downstairs at the Javits and get a return shuttle.

Take cash, checkbook & plastic, by Saturday they will be frothing at the mouth to sell you anything at any price!

Maybe not ANY price, but close ;) ...

FYI - most of my time at the show is on my dime. I get reimbursed for some expenses but that is about it. Whatever I make there comes from boat sales. Some of the bigger dealers work differently, but at small hokey places like mine I'm pretty sure I am the norm...

SO you can see why you might get accosted by overly aggressive dealers, especially on Sunday!!!

Just wanted to update - the NY Show has mercifully concluded...

Actually yesterday (Sat) was pretty busy - I think lots of people came in so as not to miss the Sunday ball games. And Sunday actually wasn't that bad - I closed two deals there...

FYI - the next round of local shows will be the Metro Boat Show Feb 9-11 at the Westchester County Center, followed by shows in Rockland and Danbury in March...

Were there any overall numbers (attendance, deals, etc.) available for the show?

Pete, I looked for you at the Stingray booth on Saturday... I've never met a real RO'er!

It seemed pretty busy to me. I had to wait over 1/2 hour to get onto the 55 footer in the corner. I wasn't that impressed with the boat, actually.

(yet another) Gary

Sorry I missed you, Gary. Saturday was indeed quite busy. I think it was because so many people wanted to be home to take in the games on Sunday. Of course, from the scores, they shouldn't have been in such a rush...

I'll bet we had more people on Saturday then on all of the previous days combined...

If you're in the neighborhood in Feb or March, come visit me at one of the other shows...

We went to the show. Holy cow at the prices of the new boats now. $150K for a 30ft boat? $230K for a 35 footer? Nuts I tell ya.

I think it may be time to get out of boating.

How is the re-sale market?

Re-sale market?

Softer than even the new boat market I think!

Rob, you must be looking at the low end boats again. :D Those prices sound cheap.

Yea Dan, I was thinking the same thing. Rob, where did you see those boats, or actually why didn't you buy a couple, you could have reaped good profits come Spring!

If you are thinking its time to get out of boating because of costs, you probably got into boating for the wrong reason. The re-sale market is in the tank - where ever that is. My boat is up for sale now, I hope to sell within 2 years; I'm looking at a boat this weekend which has been on the market for 2 years, maybe I'll find the tank when I look at this boat [:-hot]

I have been boating for 18 years. I got into it for the right reasons. :)

We want to buy a bigger boat but cant afford to. I have a 2005 Rinker 300. Now with a little one its tight in the cabin.

Can't buy a used boat until we sell this one or trade it in. Since the new boat prices are so high it looks like we are stuck with this boat or taking a loss and getting out.

Sorry I did not price the over-inflated SeaRay prices.

Bob I hate to say it, but there are alot of folks that know the feeling. But consider yourself in a good position if you have a 30 footer! That's quite a bit of boat and will certainly deliver alot of good times if you give it the chance.

I agree. I wanted a 33 soooo bad. It really upset me when I decided to scale back after my heart attack last year. Ah heck, it still bugs me. But buying another 28 was the best thing I could have done. It is exactly what we needed in terms of balancing maintenance and costs with having a boat big enough to take extended cruises and use as our summer house up in Kingston. So all in all, having to console myself with this boat really isn't all that bad :) !!!

DOnt get me wrong the boat is good and we have allot of fun on it. Its just tight with 3 people living on it every weekend. We take it away when we can. Been to AC, Beach Have, Point Pleasant and next year scheduled to go to Newport, Block and Montauk. We take it to Kingston twice a year. Nervous to go back up there this year after last years engine failure.

Rob, looks like oyu do really know how to enjoy the boat, those are some pretty ambitious destinations there. When you say Kingston do you mean NY or Ontario? And where do you slip the boat? Again you are doing some really nice boating regardless of how "tight" it may seem. I'm sitting here thinking if he is going all these places and its tight, what's going to happen when the family is comfortable, ICW to Florida or the Inner Loop :D...best of luck.

We try to enjoy it as much as we can.

Kingston NY that is.

We keep her docked at Haverstraw Marina.

ICW to Florida - Lets go now. :D
