I grew up on my father's boat at Jackson's Marina. It really is great out there.

depends on where you head. Don't try friday afternoon unless you are only going to hampton bays or riverhead. Sunday afternoon on the way home could be slow.

I'm sure there are plenty of slips available. If you're not into fishing then Riverhead's a great place to consider. There's also a real nice marina just north of locks on the canal...they have a pool along with a very attentive staff. If fishing's in the cards then Mattituck (Peconic side) or Greenport...Shinnecock Bay there's Indian Cove, Jackson's, and others depending on boat size.

Check Treasure Cove in Riverhead if you don't fish or SS3 in Hampton Bays north of the locks. There's also Strongs in Mattituck on the Peconic side. Although I like Greenport because I fish and its very close to the grounds, I would prefer to keep the boat a little closer if I was cruising.
For me, I'd rather drive the car a little extra to gain some space and get away from the armada. Greenport, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island,3 Mile Harbor are all destinations and are nice rides from the west side of the Peconics. We anchor off the sand bar on Robins Island....many boats do...friend brings his 50 MY there from Jersey the last few years. He stays at SS3.

Sunday in January is a whole lot differnt than a weekend in the late Spring through Fall.
We used to go out to Greenport once in a while, and a friend had two Motel (Condo) rooms he owned for many years in Southold.
Traffic between Riverhead and Greenport can be a disaster in the season. One of the reasons we don't go out there as much anymore.
Summer itself is the worst, but the Springtime and Fall are still a little nuts with the Wineries.
Riverhead, or someplace closer to there than Greenport is, would probably be a much better deal as far as traffic goes.
I've kept my boat out at Montauk for 3 months each of the last 2 seasons. Traffic can be an issue but if you time it right you can work around it. Dealing with getting through the Hamptons is much worse than going to Riverhead, but from a fishing perspective I'd rather just go straight to Montauk. I generally either went out late enough on a Friday to avoid the rush (usually get out there 10-11pm) or early Saturday. On the return I'd either leave late Sunday or very early Monday morning. Mix in some long weekends and longer trips and the drive was worth it. I wasn't doing the full season though which makes it easier to deal with also.
I keep it at Montauk Marine Basin, they are willing to do a reasonable rate for a partial season. Since I have my own dock at home I can split the season which is nice, go out east for the long weekends during the peak of the season and keep it at home for the spring and fall and do local trips and not have to do the long drive the full season. Most likely I'll do that again this season.

Riverhead isn't usually a horrible trip at all. If I were looking to keep the boat out east for any length of time I'd probably try to stay close to there. That only works if it fits in with what you want to do out there though.
