I recently purchased a chap 290 from penny bridge & had a bow thruster installed-will be staying at PBM. Look forward to meeting some of you-have been lurking for some time. Had a boat with IO's for few years a long time ago and it is time for me to get back into boating-I am a novice at best.

Capt Don is doing the delivery and I know he is a fan of steering wheel and shifters. I was on the LI sound before with no real tide/current concerns like PB. Is it necessary to use the wheel with a duo prop (as I have heard) with the challenging environment? or Would it be OK to tell Capt Don not doing it that way?

Do you have a single, or twins? If you can dock at PBM, you can dock anywhere!

And if you cant dock anywhere?

Then you will need to learn. I'm sure you will be fine with a little practice. Just stay claim that the trick.

I had a 28' with twin volvo DP's, no bow thruster. I docked it like an inboard, just using throttles and gears.

When I come into PBM, I make sure my rudders are straight and don't touch the wheel from the time I get to the sea wall by Panco. From there to my slip, it's all throttles and gears.

Whatever works for you is what is best for you. Make sure you know which way the current is running, backing against it is always easier.

The 290 can be run either way. Having the bow thruster will help if you use just the shifters. You also will have to use more throttle to get the boat to respond with just the shifters. It will do you well to learn to dock the boat both ways.

Im sure your going to enjoy the boat. Its a well laid out boat and handles well.

Stop by B dock and meet the gang. Any questions, dont be afraid to ask. Thats what we are here and there for...

Capt. Don is the man to listen to. He taught us on our first boat which was a 30 footer with twin I/Os. He will teach you boat handling in worst case scenarios. What will you do if you are docking without the wheel and 1 engine stalls? He is the best investment you can make to enhance your enjoyment of your boat. I recently purchased a much larger boat with twin inboards and a bow thruster and I'm hiring Capt. Don for another lesson because I know he will make me feel more confident. Best wishes for a great season with your new boat.

I heard thru the grapevine that Rita is down to seven fingers now...

Was she a smoker?
Sorry I read your post and the quit smoking comercial came to mind with the woman who had stubs for finger because she wouldn't quit.

I saw Capt. Don doing a demo a couple of years ago and he was slamming the boat in and out of gear, and revving the RPM's to high for my taste. I just felt he was to rough on the drives and the passengers. Slow and steady works for me.

just my 2 pennies.

Thanks for the pointers & perspectives. It is all a bit intimidating. I am heading out with capt Don on Thurs. Look forward to meeting you guys rather then running into you :-)

If any of you that responded would like a Passover or Easter floral arrangement LMK and I will give U a coupon for 50% off what you buy at my store.

"CLEAR!"

We saw a couple who took lessons from Capt. Don.. All I can say is this couple scarred the living $hit out of me. Let's just say never put your engines in gear and then have your significant other take the dock lines off.

I also had a 28'er with twin duoprops extremely similar to HOGAN :~)

For the first few outings, I used the wheel to swing the i/os. When I finally listened to everyone and just focused on the gears, things were much easier. After a while, once you are comfortable using the throttles to goose the appropriate engine, things get even easier.

Now that I have inboards, they are even easier to control the boat. I suspect it's due to the I/O's being closer together and the lack of prop-walk of a duoprop (if you know how to use prop walk to your advantage).
