Newport Rhode Island Marinas.

Planning a trip to RI, any suggestions on marinas? We would like it to be kid friendly for my friend's families, maybe a pool, if no pool that's ok too. We want to be walking distance to the town strip. Most likely we will rent a car/van to do the mansion tours and scenic drives. Been there a few times by car, never by boat, so any other information will be appreciated.

The only place with a pool (indoor) is the Newport Hotel & Marina.

If you like lobster, buy it at the Aquidneck Lobster Co., they will cook it for you.

Thanks, no pool is ok. Just like to be in a marina where the admiral and I are not sitting on the town walkway, but close enough to walk. When we were last there in 2000 just before we started boating, I remember seeing a ton of marinas, but at the time was not paying that close attention to the amenities and if there were transients. I remember Goat Island, I think had what I thought a nice marina.

Love Lobsters, we did a similar thing at Fishers Island. They delivered them cooked and hot. We had bought corn / salads at the local market and were very ready for the delivery. That night with all our friends feasting as the sun went down was a highlight of the trip.
 
Make sure to eat at the Red Parrot, it is excellent and reasonably priced.

I will note that… Have eaten in bunch of places there, but I only seem to recall the Black Opal and the White Horse Tavern.
 
Andy, is Black Opal along bannisterswharf ? There are some big boats in NP.

I think the name of the restaurant you are speaking of is the Black Pearl. it is right on the wharf. Make sure you try their clam chowder. It is among the best around. They sell it at an outdoor stand if you don't want to eat there. Restaurant has 2 sections: a tavern type atmosphere and a very dressy dining room.
We usually stay at the Hotel and Marina. You are right in town, it has an indoor pool and a restaurant. Have fun. it is a wonderful place to visit.
 
Yes the Black Pearl!! not Opal…. I have had the New England clam chowder at the Black Pearl a few times in the late 90’s-2000 when traveling by car. Even though I am a Manhattan chowder guy, every place I ate, even at Block Island, I would order the New England chowder and none compared to the Pearl. Looking real forward to this trip, but it may be next season. We will book reservations early 2008. Hope for more RO’s consensus on a good marina to stay at. The Newport Hotel and Marina stands out at this time.
 
I think the Newport Hotel and Marina is a good choice. We usually stay at the Newport Yachting Center which is good also but no pool. Pretty much all the marinas are right on the main road there and you can walk to most things. Goat Island is a little more out of the way and someone once told me they didn't like it there but I don't remember why...

Sounds like an awesome trip.
Just an FYI Goat Island Marina is on the other side of the bridge and a good walk to town. The tradeoff is you get full privledges at the Hyatt which is a 2 minute walk. They have a killer salt water pool, bar, regular pool and some of the most amazing sunsets overlooking the bay. It is alot quieter on Goat but we spent 4 nights there last season and loved it.
Marina itself was well run and clean, good restaurant too.

We are staying at the Newport Yachting Center this weekend. If any of you are around, stop by for a cold one.
 
Just turned 50 and seems like my life is a blur at times. Got home last night and was telling my wife about the posts and suggested places to go in New Port. I never was there by boat but did travel there at least 3 times by car. When I brought up Goat Island as a new destination, she looked at me with, …… well that look….. She said, Brad we were there for your birthday weekend, remember they were converting the current hotel into the Hyatt. We walked around the marina and that’s where we chose the name Radio Waves for our boat. That’s where I gave you your Tag watch. We took shuttles into to town. Remember, the bridge walks and talking to all the fishing people.

Second the Newport Harbor Hotel. I have not stayed there but hope to over Columbus Day. All of the Amenities of the Hotel including and Indoor pool. I walked the docks this summer during a visit to Neport. The dock hands were very helpful to arriving boats and the location is prime. 30 second walk to all the goings on including Black Pearl (2nd best restaurant in town, 1st is spiced pear at beginning of cliff walk). But since the Marina is directly behind the hotel, it is sheltered from random pedestrians walking past your boat and peering in your windows.
 
Well it’s still early, but a few of my traveling buddies are beginning to plan the trip. This year it seems many have conflicting schedules and will be a later trip, who knows what will end up. I am hoping to leave around the 7th of August making a few destinations like Montauk, Greenport, Fishers Island then New Port or some combination of these destinations.

It seems the majority here like the Newport Hotel and Marina. So far unless we hear terrible things about the place, this is where we may end up.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Holy S!%^t 6 pounders. I know someone who would always pre-order 4 pounders. I have had 3lbs but I pefer 2 1&1/2 pounders for a lobster dinner.

How was cracking the shell ? and the meat taste ?
