No drain in anchor locker?

1989 Sundancer 300. Probably same anchor locker configuration as 1984+.

I've known about this issue since purchase but finally had enough. There is no drain for the channel around the anchor locker hatch, and no drain for the anchor locker itself. The hatch itself does have a gasket but water from the channel will definitely leak into the locker if not drained.

Found about 4 gallons in there this weekend (my anchor was floating!).

To make things worse, there was slight seepage into the forward berth area, leaving stains on my headliner and mattresses.

Anyone tackle this issue yet? It looks really tight in there and I don't want to go cutting holes in my boat just yet.

One thought is to use rhino-liner in the anchor locker as a way to reduce or eliminate seepage into the cabin. Another thought is to install a drain for the channel around the hatch cover.

Getting a proper drain installed for the anchor locker is the right fix... but the most challenging.

Anybody have experience with this issue?

My friend has a 270 and it has a drain so maybe they forgot to drill a hole in yours, I'd get a drill and a clamshell and put a hole a half inch up from the bottom of the anchor locker.

I've never heard of an anchor that floats. Wouldn't that kinda defeat the whole purpose of an anchor?

Picture shows the clamshell over anchor locker drain just below the bow eye on the port side of my '89 300DA. I also removed the teak pulpit and routed a couple grooves on the underside long enough to clear the deck at the front to assist with drainage. Because of the transom low attitude of the boat, it isn't completely effective, but it helps.

If you have to cut one yourself, cut it big. I have to clear mine constantly. It would be much easier if all I had to do was fill the locker and let gravity pull the "muck".

Placing a grate in the bottom of the locker above the drain makes things neater.

I've always wondering about the location of the drain hole, why does it always about half or an inch above the bottom or so?.(some water always traps in there), what happen if the drain is located at the bottom? beside draining all water out.

Thanks guys !

I do have a clam shell on the outside but can't reach it until I move the boat. Will check to see if it even has a hole... but I do NOT see any hole inside the anchor locker.

Where exactly is the interior hole in your anchor lockers? The only place it might be is directly below the build-up for the bow eye, but I felt around in there and didn't find it.

If you have a clam shell the hole is clogged. You'll have to remove the anchor rode and clean it out.

If you have a clam shell, stick a wire thru it so you will see it inside the locker. The wire just might clean it out enought so it drains.

Try a shot from a garden hose into the clamshell. This might "backflush" the drain hole enough to clear it.

Hole from the inside looking forward is an inch or two below the bow eye and about a half inch above the locker floor. Not the best plan in the world but it's better than nothing.

Wow, thanks so much!

I love this forum... will inspect my locker a bit more carefully today as I didn't see the hole when I last looked. I'll also try the wire & hose tricks.

Thanks everyone.

JACKPOT !!!!

Thanks to Play Dough for the picture, I was able to find the existing drain hole. Yes, it was plugged and I could not feel it in the dark recesses of the anchor locker. Poked it with wire, problem solved.

No problem...I happen to be on the boat this week and hadn't been in the anchor locker for awhile so it provided a good excuse to inspect anchors, line, etc.

Put some spray insulation foam at the gap at the top of the anchor locker bulkhead to keep water from getting into the cabin. Don't use Great Stuff. Never get it off your hands. Use the white stuff. When you drill the drain hole, make it larger and coat with epoxy.
