Uh-Oh....Just goes to show mis-informed I am.

We're leaving this Sunday for a trip down to Kingston and probably beyond (from Oneida Lake) and it's been my impression that once you were below Troy that the Hudson was pretty much "Run at whatever speed within reason". Obviously at a "SAFE" speed etc. but with no real limitations. (NOT that I intend to nor do I want to run 50mph)
Now in reading the thread regarding tides and currents (thought maybe I could learn something to maybe help me with fuel economy) I read that below Troy that there are "No Wake Zones" ?
Anybody know where they are?....How they're marked? Easily recognizable as such? etc. etc. etc.????????

Let's see. Basically all the yacht clubs should be respected. Albany Yacht, Castleton, if the tide is up over the wall Ravina Coeymans, then Shady Harbor Marina occupants will complain and have called the police. Also, when passing the Hudson Power Boat Club be considerate or you may have issues.

While they may not be designated no wake zones, you won't make any friends if you blow by them.

I believe that legally, the municipality must pass a law to enact a "no wake" zone, and that they can only regulate speed within 1500' of shore.

That being said, remember that you are responsible for your wake and that slowing down when passing marinas is the courteous thing to do.

Hogan...I guess the reason I asked about this is because of what I was reading on another thread.

http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=116050

"Once you get above Kingston you are also subject to a lot of NO WAKE zones as the river narrows. Basically you can make time from Verplanck to Kingston, but after that point you will find yourself slowing down or at least coming off plane numerous times."

Please rest assured that I'm NOT the guy that blows by Marinas or boats that are anchored and/or at rest while fishing or docked boats or any of that other nonsense just because I can. I wouldn't want it done to me so consequently I don't do it to them.
Obviously a Marina or something of that nature will be readily detectable plus my GPS/Chartplotter has them all shown so I'll know well in advance of approaching them.
My question was more as to wether or not there are other No Wake Zones that don't necessarily have a Marina or something nearby but are designated as such for possibly some other reason and how to identify these areas.???

It's not all that bad. Things are pretty spread out and you see them at a distance so you can plan ahead and slow down. It's no big deal really. We've taken Freedom up to the Troy lock and pushed it to 16 knots at several points. Since we push about a 4 foot wake at this speed, we've learned to back off appropriately.
s/b no problem for you as long as you pay attention to the shoreline.

I think there might be a spot or two with some private docks along the way, and those should be given some respect also. It depends how much water you throw.

Thanks for the input. Actually I'm in that same sort of quandry that alot of people with my size boat are in. Go 9-14 miles an hour and throw a good size wake......go 5 mph and it's a ripple......24-50mph and it's not enough to ever bother anybody but the size of the boat and style automatically makes people watching THINK that you're throwing a wake that you're not. I know about the "perception of" state of mind so I just try to be mindful of the surroundings and act accordingly.
Thanks for the input though.

Know what you mean about the " perception " thing I'm in the same boat . At 35 or so I hardly make a ripple it's much more wake at 5 to 7 mph.
I'll never figure that one out , so i usually do th same thing you were saying and just slow down to be courtious even though the wake is usually larger, most people just don't get it , or have nothing elese to do but complain , i wouldn't worry about it too much , sounds like your doing the right thing.
Have a grat trip......Jon

Stoney Point......Hmmmmm....Gonna have to look that up on the map and see if I've got enough Gas to get there too.

Not too far from kingston about 50 mi. or so ,some of the most senic mountain views are between Newburgh beacon bridge and bear mtn. bridge I would say worth the trip if you have time, planing on roundout this weekend mabey stay till mon.
If you head down this way give a shout on 69 and stop for a beer and say hello .

Thanks jon and don't be surprised if we do. Time is not a factor here as much as the almighty dollar. (gas) We actually have all summer so I guess if we keep timing it right we could just float on the current a few miles a day and get there eventually?...lol...I'd give you a shout on 69 but it might sound a bit foolish.....me calling....jonf.....jonf.....this is the Kalena II.....Any better name to hail?

Kalena, that's how he hailed me over the weekend, "hogan, hogan, hogan, this is jonf"

Well thats the name of your boat ain't it . And it was more like" Hogan or the penny bridge gang ,you guys got it on." (over)didn't know how eles you'd know it was me bud.

KALENA II, old boat was called the galleon so i kept it , thats what most call me by if not worse:)
usually do the weekend warrior thig fri. night to sun. but I will keep an ear on the raido for ya,Hogans gang has shouted back every time i called so try them also.

Wow, if I heard, "you guys got it on" I never would have answered!!! I only respond to proper VHF usage.

In the words of Steve Martin .."WELL EXCUUUUSE ME !!! " :)

LOL......
Okay....I'll give ya a shout if I get down that far. In fact....maybe I should just plan it.....
Gimme a few minutes....I'm gonna raid the Piggy Bank to see how much is in there.

We will have a few cold ones for you beer wine or what ever your poison is .. be nice to catch you in kingston but you probably won't be there by then .
are you gonna bring your comp. with you , sometimes you can grab siginals near the marinas.
If not I will pm you a ph.# if you like ,always be happy to lend a hand or a trip to the grocery store or anything elese i can do , I know what it's like to be far from home on the boat , be my pleasure to help out any way i could so keep it in mind ok , don't be shy... Jon

My "Poison" would be Captain Morgan and thanks for the offer but I always have PLENTY of that on board. Might not be a bad idea to send me a cell number though in case I can't get you on the radio for whatever reason. I"ll put it in my phone just in case. You could just send me an E-Mail at

I was under the impression as long as you're not making a wake you're a-okay as well. A little south of the barge restaurant in Troy, there's a Sheriff dock on the east side. Kinda hard to see and just has a small "no wake" buoy marking it. I imagine it's probably right next to the Rensselaer jail, but I've only been down that way twice and never really paid much attention. It'd make sense though. After that, from what I remember it's open water until you hit the Albany Yacht Club, then there's the Port of Albany. I don't remember seeing anything about no wake in the port, but seeing a humungous freighter being pushed sideways into the dock by a tugboat was enough to get me to slow way down.

If you happen to stop at the barge restaurants, put out some extra fenders and make sure you're tied up good! Both times I've been at the one in Troy, a few idiots went by throwing huge wakes. The worst was some big 50-60' yacht with it's bow way up in the air making a good 4' wake. It was enough to rock the restaurant as well as toss the docks airborne.

How long should it take to reach the Hudson from where you are? I'd like to head up the Erie Canal at least once this summer on a long weekend and am still trying to figure out how far I should be able to make it before having to stop and turn around

Onieda is three days unless you flog yourself out of enjoying the ride.
