I will be having my grandkids visit later this month. Would like to take them someplace where they could swim and hang out on the North Shore - I am out of Manhasset Harbor. I have been told the "Sand Hole" would be a good spot but that it is difficult to get into and out of. Anybody have any recent experience. My boat is 40' loa twin screw. Thanks.

The entrance is the tricky part. There is a breakwater that is submerged at high tide and there is at least one shallow spot after you swing around and enter. Inaddition, the water literally rushes in or out depending on how the tide is running. To get in, you need to run straight at the beach (there was a private marker there) and make a sharp right running close to the beach. Once inside, there is plently of water to anchor and there are many big boats that go in there.
I personally don't go in there anymore due to the bent prop stories and toll on my nerves. An alternative would be to go around Centre Island into Oyster Bay. There is an anchorage off Bayville that is very nice and suitable for swimming. That is where we go now.
My advice if you really want to go there would be to follow someone else in and be mindful of the breakwater and the tide.

What Mark said - you could also contiue into Huntington Bay and anchor in Northport Bay near the beach.

Sand City is good, go left past past green "1" on Hogan's chart, then you will see a island and alot of boats.

I have always found that place to be full of green flies. Centre Island is much nicer.
Even better is the backyard outside of pelham.
Go straight across from manhasset and aim for the green can off the island that used to be a radio station. Keep that green can to your left there is a big rock there. Just keep going straight and you will pick up a red and green
leading into the backyard. Do not drift left hug the red cans. You will see the NYAC then go left.
You can also go to city island then cut across.

Thanks all for the help and advice. This will be the first time I have the grandkids on board and I am sure my "anxiety level" will be higher than normal. Probably will stay away from the "Sand Hole" and try one or more of the other recommendations. Thanks again.

I believe that you cannot go on the sand at the Sand Hole anymore. The treehuggers are protecting a species of birds and have designated the entire hole as a nesting spot.
Go to Sand City. That's a good spot for the kids.

You can still go ashore at the sand hole but there are area's that are blocked off for bird nesting.

it has less wind than Sand City and is closer to your homeport
