North Shore - where can I dock?

I am looking at a 1999 twin engine Monterey I will not be able to trailer the boat. I live on the North Shore in Wading River. Where can I dock and what are the prices? Is there anyway to find private slips? Behind someone's house? Last boat I had was on the Patchogue River, but I want to stay on the North Shore. Any suggestions?
 
The two closest places are Mattituck or Mt. Sinai/Pt. Jefferson
 
It depends a lot on what you want to do with the boat. If you want to cruise and driving to the boat is a consideration, Port Jefferson, as Hogan said, is an excellent harbor. If anchoring out and or going to close destinations, you can't beat the Great Peconic Bay. It is a beautiful place to be. Rob will hopefully add to the discussion, but as close as Riverhead to you there are very nice marinas. My personal favorite if travel wasn't a consideration would be one of the two Brewers in Greenport.

I agree with Billy. Brewers in Greenport ! I prefer sterling but that's me .

There is not a lot of private slips. Cheapest bet is a mooring. Next is a slip in places others said. I know a lot of people that do moorings on north shore and to me it's a big hassle with seagulls, no power and lack of easy access to boat.

When I looked at north shore I looked from Huntington to port Jeff and the prices I was quoted scared me back to south shore. Between costs and time to get out of harbor I didn't see a big advantage to south shore.

If you haven't been to Patchogue in a few years you are going to be really surprised. Before you blow it off, take a ride down. The changes to the western part of the village have been dramatic.

BillyK, they have really done a nice job in Pathogue. I love the town. Only reason I was thinking North Shore was close to home, and thought we could check out CT. Unfortunately as much as I like Greenport, it is to far to drive on a regular basis or just to go after work. I will have to check out the Peconic Bay.

FWIW - On the North shore you have a number of family and fun places to go including but not limited to: Pt Washington, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Huntington, Northport, Pt Jeff, Mt Sinai, Mattituck (now Strongs marine), Greenport. And on the Ct side there are even more stops with both family and fun places including bit not limited to: Norwalk, Black Rock, Cedar Island, Westbrook, Ct River, Thames, Mystic, Watch hill and then spots in RI. Some areas like the Ct. River and Mystic easily have enough spots and things to do to take up a full week without becoming old. Certainly worth looking at all the destinations and possibilities before weighing in on the choice. I have boated on each shore and this is just one opinion.
