Made sure the boat floated by spending time on Folsom Lake 7/18/10. Granddaughter Casey, BF Wade, Daughter Debbie with BF Jeff. Doug was in the water with the camera.

Getting extra insurance on 7/19/10, then left for Alaska from Sacramento, CA.

7/20, 3AM arrived Portland where they had breakfast with Casey's bro who lives there. Then on to Seattle! Arrived Seattle 1PM.

7PM took three hours to get through Customs at Blaine WA. Got out of town and settled down for a night camping on the boat.

7/22 8AM "yesterday we showered in a river. and cooked our grilled cheese in the engine. so I guess we had engine cheese."

"made Fort Nelson by 3PM then on to Liard Hot Springs" for a luxury overnight stay.

7/23 5 different black bear sightings; this was the smallest

7/23 Not much traffic....

7/23 Opps! A tire truck damaged the boat windshield. First mishap of the trip.

7/24 4PM Finally heard from Doug. I think this is at Upper Liard YT Canada on Hwy 1. Now heading west to Alaska!

Kluane Lake just prior to Destruction Bay, Canada

8:30PM at North Pole, Alaska!

ETA for Fairbanks about 9:30PM WOW!!!

ARRIVED in Fairbanks at 10:30PM. All is well.

Where are you headed, Liz? Skagway, Haines or all the way to Anchorage/Whittier/Seward?

I hope you get some great boating weather up there. Have a great trip!

OS

Wow, They're making awfully good time. I'm impressed. Have them send Lat/lon so we can follow.:D

I've been g00gling the name of the town and getting locations that way. Hwy 97 in BC Canada and Hwy 1 in Yukon Territory and Alaska. Hwy 2 goes into Fairbanks.

Old Salt, I'm here in the California Sierras. My son Doug has taken over the boat and it is headed to Fairbanks by road; then down the Yukon River to Nome where he and his family live.

I can't afford boating anymore.......

It's amazing they did that towing a boat in under 5 days.

Anchorage to Dallas is about 5000 miles and GE says something like 3-days, 5-hours. I think they neglected stops for fuel, food, rest, other essentials.

It is amazing that a neglected 19-yr-old cheap trailer made it without breaking down!!!!!

If Doug is able to maintain contact while cruising down the Yukon, I'll start a new tread. But I doubt there is much cell coverage along that river. He won't launch until next week after that windshield gets repaired and the boat get provisioned.

out there in the boonies i would want some protection but he couldn’t have a gun crossing through Canada so what will he do for protection?

Technicalities! As an Alaskan, I'm sure he's got it covered. :)

Mapquest says

55 hours 44 minutes / 3023.56 miles

Aslong as the gun(s) are reported to the Border Patrol there is no problem...

Graet Pics Liz...keep em coming...eh

As long as they have the required trigger locks on them and meet the requirements of our laws... yes...
I started a thread in NBR so not to hijack this one...

I just read an email from Doug's wonderful wife Janice. She was in Anchorage on her way to Fairbanks to join up with Doug, et all. She has promised to take LOTS of pictures. She is a camera bug, so I know she will! She just may not be able to send them very often.

I can't answer about the gun thing, but I know Doug never goes out into bear country without being prepared:

Liz,
Great trip report, thanks for posting! Makes me want to quit my job and head north for a while, but I'm not sure the bill collectors would understand.

Make sure he understands winterizing. There are pockets of water in the drive that you can't get all the water out and can crack the cases

Here is Doug's new boat, the Dora Dee, with the $79 windshield repaired.

LOL I gave them the boat with excellent blue or white dock lines onboard and several unopened packages of new dock lines available. And they went and bought those brightly colored orange/red lines?????? Must be something they do in Alaska?

Well, it is their boat now and they can do whatever they please! Bye bye Vessel Flutterby; hello Vessel Dora Dee!

Rather than lines, they look like orange 1" tie down straps like the ones that I use for cinching down our dirt bikes in the toy hauler.

[?] I'd have to get a closer look to be sure though... [:-magnify]
