Oil Soaked Ropes

A gallon jug of Bombardier SeaDoo oil cracked and very good oil soaked many of my extra ropes. I know that dirty ropes can be put in the clothes washer, but I hesitate to put the oily ropes in. Any suggestions on cleaning the oil out of the ropes without destroying the ropes. They all all three strand - anchor lines and dock lines.

Maybe swish them around in a bucket of water with Dawn liquid detergent. Do it a couple of times and that should get the oil out.
 
After you do the bucket/Dawn thing, then do the clothes washer with fabric softener. Let them hang dry and they'll be better than new. The cleaning up the gallon of spilled oil. If you use hot water and Dawn, it'll be easier. I know it'll take plenty of hot water, but the hot water works better than cold.
 
Or you could go to the laundromat and use their front load washers using a ton dawn instead of detergent. You would probably want to do this very late at night and not in your neighborhood.

If you go this route, at least do the bucket thing once before putting them in the washer.
 
Soak 'em first with a good detergent in a bucket or a tub and finish with a quick rinse. Then then put 'em in a couple of mesh bags, distribute the load, throw 'em in the washing machine with ordinary laundry detergent. The bag will keep them from getting wrapped around the hub.
 
I include a bunch of rags. The help balance the load and act as scrubbers for the lines.
 
don't put dawn in a washing machine, you'll be sorry and sudsy
 
Do as KiDA says only double the amount of dawn he suggested!
 
I did that with my canvas covers at the laundramat! They were not impressed! Luckily it was not a busy day and I got out of there without having the trailer park empty out coming after the rich guy with boat covers! I liked the lady who watched me put the covers in the washing machine and said..."Hey, I put my underwear in those machines!" I wanted to say..."that's OK. Your underwear won't stain the covers too bad." But I kept that and the fact that her underwear were probably LARGER than my covers to myself!
 
Buy new ones. You may never get all the oil out and it will attack the fibers. When you need it Murphy says it will break.
