I have twin 1985 Crusader 270hp gas motors with about 800 hours. What oil should I be using?

The engine forum is really a better place to ask this as it's not a Carver issue.

I know that but I trust Carver owners more than all of the other "experts". With only nine posts in the last week on this page, I don't think that will cause a problem.

Posting here isn't a problem but you are asking an engine question and you might get more/better response on the engine forum. There are a lot of great boats that have Crusader engines in them, not just Carvers and some of those other boat owners that may be engine experts may not read the Carver web site.

Perhaps Kenny will chime in with some mechanical expertise. Please don't be afraid to go post over in "Engines..." though - its a fine forum as well...

First, I would follow the recommendations from the owners manual.
If you do a search on the Engine or Winterizing forum (can't remember which) there was a LOOOOOONG post last year discussing different types of oils and impacts on engine life.
Good luck.
Don

Don't worry, we won't bite you if you share it on here ;) ...

The FIRST thing that you need to do is go to

bobistheoilguy.com

and learn about oil in general.

George (not a carver owner)

Normally I would, but 32carv is only interested (trusts ?) the words of other Carver owners.

O.K., now I'm interested / trusting... Please.... what do other boaters use?

i've got 280 hp crusader 350 ht xl's in my 1996 carve voyager and the manual calls for sae 40 oil. please note that your engine may be different and that different oils are recommended for the transmissions and v-drives (sae 30 and dextron, respectively) as well as power steering, trim tabs, etc, etc. i found it best to put a spreadsheet together with all of the model numbers, etc of all the equipment and the fluids, belt sizes, filter sizes needed for replacements. it's a great quick reference guide when you need to winterize or just do an oil change. if you don't have an engine manual, i would recommend you get one as they are great sources of information, including how to winterize the engine. i've called crusader on a number of occasions (both the company itself and a local distributtr for their engines, which also sells parts) and i've found them to be extremely helpful over the phone.

OK, My '94 Crusader 350 XLs called for st 40 wt and my current Crusader 454 XLs call for the same. My Crusader dealer has recommended from the start that I use Merc 25-40 oil. According to Merc, it contains additives helpful in the marine environment to prolong engine life. I change oil and filter religiously at 50 hrs or less and the oil always looks almost as good coming out as it did going in.

My 95 Crusaders also call for 40wt oil. Its hard to find in a small town (at least brand name oil is), but I figure if the mfg recommends it, it can't hurt.
