Dan, when are you going to make your crossing? It looks like you may have a window on Wednesday but then it closes down on Thursday and gets nasty again.

We're waiting for your photos. So let's get going here. :)

Bob

I don't believe Wednesday is going to work out for us. I'm open to that, but last I checked it was still going to be 4-6 footers out there. It looks like it will be at least one more week of waiting.

Yeah, I think you're right. I thought there was going to be a 1 day window but it looks like Ida is going to mess that up.

where are you holing up?

Bob

We're just off Lake Worth and have a car. Actually this is working to our benefit since we are finding more things that should be repaired before we go across. Yesterday the ubiquitous U-line ice maker crapped out again. I'll update that thread with what I found tomorrow if the fix holds up.
So far we've installed a new 17' antenna and radio, a refrigerator, two raw water pumps, new ice maker parts, shampooed the interior carpets, changed the oil and filters, cleaned up the dink, cleaned about 1/16 of an inch of mildew off the hard top and aft deck top, installed a new microwave, changed fresh water filters out (difficult to access), oiled up all the interior teak, resealed the window that the refrigerator was installed through, and we have yet to wax her.
It's not like we have a lack of work to keep us occupied. The days are going quite fast.

So are you going to take another shot at the crossing soon?

Well, the boat goes to the shop next week or week after for the repower project. As soon as that's done I am planning to do a shakedown cruise then start heading south. It'll probably be January before I get down there but I do most certainly plan to get there as soon as the boat is ready.

Bob

The way the GS has been it looks like you may be back in the water before we get to cross!

tomorrow really looks good, winds are down to 10kts at fowey, near calm here in the grove. 2 to 4 tomorrow with south winds, doesn't get better than that.

they really screwed that forecast, until yestereday, tomorrow was still supposed to be 20 to 25kts!

hey Dan, i'd love to see the pics you took the other day! could you post them in the Nantucket-Miammi thread, or if it's easier just email them to me? thks!

if the stream remains bad, come on down to beautiful biscayne bay!

I just looked at both NOAA and passageweather. Wednesday night and Friday night both look good. Daytimes may be iffy but the nighttime looks pretty calm for those two nights.

Bob

Dammit. We can't cross again until May 2010!

Dan, keep in touch if you get to the Exumas this year. We're still deciding on where we'll put our month in (of course, mother nature will rule that decision too).

Pascal it does get better than that! Last year we went over on glass. We came back in slop, but we went over on glass! If we were here a bit earlier we would have had it made. Here's a shot looking back at West Palm in the distance. This is when it was "rough".

As the day wore on, it laid down even more...

At this point we are now waiting for parts from U-line. They committed to getting me a new ice maker (not the whole refrigerator) as long as I paid for the expidited shipping. So now we are not going until at least Friday when that should arrive.

Last time I made the crossing it was exactly like that but I did it at night. There was no moon and the stars were HUGE!

Throttled back and took a very slow go. It was awsome.

Coming back was daytime and 3' - 4'. Not as much fun but not bad at all. :)

Bob

We had a shot tomorrow, but we are still waiting on parts. Once they show, we go when we can.

How's it going Dan? Get the parts you're waiting for yet?

Hope you get a break but crossing looks pretty iffy for the next week or so.

My 'lil boat goes to the yard for the engine transplant today. should be all buttoned up in about 2 weeks.

Bob

Yes Bob we did get them. U-Line came through. I got the parts today and the icemaker has just finished the third batch of ice. I'm thinking that perhaps Monday we may cross. If we back out we are heading south so we can ride the stream north on the next opportunity. Good luck with the transplant!

Looks like Tuesday or Wednesday will be really nice for you to cross, 2'-3' in the stream according to weather.gov.

Boat is in the hospital for the transplant. :)

Bob

Yes, we have an eye on it! The Mon-Tues forecast for the GS has been sea-sawing for several days now. We were out at the beach this morning and it looked like there were some good rollers in the distance. Otherwise it looked ok. We are going to stick our nose out and if we get out there and it doesn't work we'll head for Ft. Lauderdale or Hillsboro.
Good luck with the work!

In Ft. Lauderdale. Good weather.... We'll see.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Bob

PS: I just looked at passageweather and NOAA. From what I see there I hope you are on your way right now.. Looks like the worst is 2'-3'. :) Enjoy!
