OK, Boatbum, Where's the Photos?

We made it!!! We're at Grand Bahama Yacht Club waiting to clear customs. There were 2-3 foot swells for the first few hours, but they settled down as the day went on and eventually it was very flat. No pictures yet.

Edit: "Her Lurkness" filled that in. I just got back from customs and immigration. We left Ft. Lauderdale at 6:15 am and made our way down the New River in the dark. There were other boats moving out as well, but before we even got turned around a fast moving commercial boat came around the bend and stopped short of us. He allowed us to spin and we moved on.
The sunrise was brilliant orange as we moved out the inlet and into 1-2 easy going water. It quickly turned into 2-3 with occasional 4 footers coming right at us out of the North East. So we pounded away for 2 hours at about 9 knots in quartering seas. The worst of this was the separation was only a few seconds so it became tiring quickly.
But once we were 1/3 of the way across, about 25 miles out, things started laying down and ultimately flattened out once we were 6 hours into the 10 it took us to cross.
The folks here at Lucaya are great and very helpful. We have yet to see much of Grand Bahama Yacht club so we'll chill for a day before we take on the water way to the north side. Freedom needs a good bath to unload all the salt and she has to cool down before I can check over the bilge.

Fan-damn-tastic! Glad you made it safe and sound! Pix! We want pix!

Dan,

Glad you made it. Please let us know how GBYC is as I just checked out their rates and, wow, they're MUCH cheaper than OBB. I might have to change my plans for next Spring.

Have a great time with lots of pics. I need to live my life through your camera lens.

Kurt
Thomas gave us 10% off dockage. Water is 5 bucks a day power is 45 cents the kw. I say this is certainly cheaper than OBB. Our dockage was 118 without power for 2 days. I'm thinking it's half OBB.
If you come this way, and I'm hoping the water way north is a fun ride, it seems cheaper and there is much more happening here in Lucaya.

Dan,

I'm going to try and talk the Admiral into it. We did have a great time on the beach killing time at OBB last trip, but that place is way too expensive for a 30' boat. And it's always nice to see new places.

BTW, what did you do for an internet solution this trip? I talked to Batelco and they've at least got EDGE speeds all over the Abacos. My Verizon global phone only does GSM so I'm going to get something that does at least EDGE before we head back (GSM speeds are around 40k while EDGE is closer to 140k).

We are still using the wifi rig we had last year. A high powered router ethernet'd to a generic wifi downstairs. It was adequate last year. Perhaps next year we'll upgrade the phones. This year we have a Samsung Renown and it has connected in Lucaya (no great feat).
There are better reefs right here to explore than West End. Hopefully we will get out in the dink to check them out today. We have a good crust of salt to remove first.

Hi Dan

looks like we're going to follow you across the stream tomorrow, although further south. I was getting ready to head west, taking a 53 Hatteras to Houston when just two days ago we got booked for a week charter to Bimini and Nassau! change of plans, Bahamas here we come! then as soon as i get back next saturday, I jump boat and start the trip to Houston on sunday.

you guys are killing me!

I just finished doing my nightly dance to the "Repower Gods". From the looks of it, I will have everything done and all buttoned up in time to be in the Bahamas for the Christmas holidays! Pussers here I come!

Yaa Hoo Buckaroo!!

Bob

Dan, your pix on photobucket look really awsome! Keep them coming!

I can't wait for my boat to be back in the water so i can start loading and preping for my next trip!

More pix! Post more pix!

Bob

Where are you now, Dan? How about an update. :)

Bob

Bob thanks! We have a guest and as you have accurately predicted we have consumption. Although it has been Havanna Club neat. I have managed to pop out a couple of blog updates and they are at danmapes.blogspot.com . We were really fortunate today in that the Atlantic laid down completely. That enabled us to dink over the reefs at the North and South ends of Guana Cay.
I have not loaded up photos in a while but the blog has a few within it as well as all of the Garmin data in Google Earth format. As you can see we've covered the island of Guana Cay pretty well!

WOW, nice blog Dan. Looks like you guys are having a ball!

My repower almost done. Should get my boat back next week and will start prepping to head that way.

Leave some beverages for me when i get there! :)
