Well, it's my turn once again to ask a question, so here goes:
I'm up for gimbal bearing replacement this winter. Removing it is no problem- I can borrow the 3-jaw puller on a slide hammer from my local AutoZone. It's installing the seal and bearing that I'm concerned with here.
Being a 1987 OMC Cobra I/O, the OMC tools aren't still in production. So, what should I use to drive in the seal and bearing? Will the Mercruiser gimbal bearing tool work? Is there a preferred/better/cheaper alternative?
I figured I'd ask before I get THAT far into the job. The bearing is a bit rough, having managed to get some water in it. I really hate to even admit it, but, yes, I did leave the darn drain plug out the first time I launched after moving this summer. I was in too much of a desperate hurry to get back out on the water-boating fever, I guess. So, I suppose that's how the water got into the bellows and bearing- just a little, though. The bellows, etc. are in perfect condition, only being a couple of years old.
Thanks for any advice and help. It's not a hard job, I just need to make sure I use the proper tool(s).
