OMC outdrive tilt slams down hard gets jammed

I have a stringer out drive with electric tilt, and whenever I hit the down button it goes ALL the way down even after I let up on the switch. This by itself does not bother me, but I have noticed if you hold the switch down the whole way it builds up a lot of speed an slams closed pretty hard and after that happens about half the time when you hit the up button you just get a click from the solenoid, like something is jammed. Luckily it usually only does this on one or two try's then comes up normally again.

What I am wondering is if there is a way to slow the thing down (adjustment on the tilt clutch or something?) I have only found info on rebuilding the clutch and it looks pretty involved and not sure if it would even address my problem.

Fortunately, we have a few members with OMC outdrives and some may be able to help you. I just hope some of those OMC's are Stringer. You mention "Solenoid" and I was going to say "Relay" thinking there's a DOWN Relay/Solenoid and an UP Relay/Solenoid. If that's true, your DOWN could be sticking and replacing it would take care of part of your problem.

Here's what I did to minimize this exact issue on an OMC 400 unit. I just pulsed the down toggle switch until the drive was down. The clutch pack in the worm gear is probably frozen. If it slams too hard it can twist the lift electric motor shaft off at the pin in the drive worm gear. On my 400 this was only used to tilt up the outdrive Trim was accomplished via the front mount bolt adjustment. Some units had a separate hydraulic Trim ram in place of the bolt. Again this is from 19 years ago but the key is to use SHORT down pulses on the toggle switch!
