On-Off / Muriatic Acid

Someone once told me to make sure I cover all metal parts (sterndrive, trim tabs etc) when using On-off or muriatic acid to clean the yelowish color on my boat bottom.

So last weekend after I finished covering my metal parts and started to use the acid, I was approached by the forklift guy at the marina who also has a detailing business, and he asked me why. When I explained he said he has never heard of that. In fact he uses muriatic acid to clean sterndrives and props.

Who's right?
 
Depends on the amount of time. Won't take long for aluminum. I bet those props look super clean. Might be fine, but you really have to watch.

I melted aluminum once in just a couple days in something as weak as vinegar. Plating can be delicate. You might not leave it on too long, but then why take the chance. Also, I believe on/off is not muriatic acid, but another type of acid. I don't think you can compare the times for both on/off or muriatic as they are different acids and different molarity/strength.

I've used muratic acid (50/50 w/ water) for over 30 years and haven't had any OD troubles.
 
Harry, if you just apply On/Off with a garden sprayer with hot water in it, let sit for a coupe of minutes and then rinse off...you won't have any problems with the acid.
 
Or for about $2 a quart for SnoBowl toilet bowl cleaner vs $10 to $15 a quart for On-Off you could buy some more beer with the difference. Virtually the same acidic stuff.
 
I used the "Works" bowl cleaner for years on the sterndrives. Spray it on, let it sit for a couple minutes, scrub a little if needed, and then rinse with fresh water. Like Bill said, it's basically a muriatic/water solution for a fraction of the cost.

Works great and no issues.
 
I use Iron Out mixed in a spray bottle - about a tablespoon to a quart of H2O. Spray on and rinse well. No scrubbing required.
 
muriatic acid is great for getting barnacles off outdrives, use a mask and keep a spray hose near buy so not to leave it on but a couple of minutes.
 
I used On/Off to clean the bottom of my boat and it worked great. The brown crud just melted away. I didn't cover my aluminum trailer, but I did a section at a time and then thourghly hosed the boat and trailer down with a power washer. When I was all done I went back over the whole boat and trailer with the power washer. It was fine and the trailer didn't appear affected in any way. just be careful and you will be ok.
