Surveying a 30' Grady to purchase on Monday.

This is a NY boat that will eventually end up in FL when we do.
 
Oh well. This is why it is important to do a survey.

The boat did not pass due to excessive moisture in the cored hull.

Back to the drawing board.
 
Buddy was looking at 48 sedan bridge . ITs his dream boat . He was under the impression Searay stopped coring hulls by a certain year . HE was wrong . cored hull cant touch it.

sad . No moisture but its a time bomb

Not all cored hulls are a time bomb. How long is a time bomb,,10yrs, 15yrs, 20yrs? How old would the boat have to be to no loonger be a time bomb?

Cored hulls above the water line are not an issue.

Unless the factory did not seal the thru hulls or the hull/deck joint properly as it appears in this case since there were no after-market installations anywhere near where the issue was uncovered.
 
Cored hull below the water line is most certainly a Time bomb. So not worth the risk.

Id never invest money in it no matter how good the deal.

About ten year ago, I rebuilt a 24' Classic cruiser, rebuilding or replacing almost everything excep the hull. You guessed it - over the second winter of ownership, the cored hull collapsed around one of the cement block stands at the keel. The boat was stripped and scrapped. The weakened core had not shown on the survey; he never used a moisture meter and I didn't know anything about cored hulls at the time. I know better now. Hy
 
So out of curiosity, what happens if a solid hull is breached?

It's not a simple answer because there are a lot of questions to be asked, but a fiberglass guy would cut out the area that is cracked or open, fix the structural issues and re-fiberglass the area. Fairly simple actually, but there are other issues.
