Well, we've made it through the worst of winter, only 3 months to go until the cover comes off and we start getting her ready for summer 2011.

This year, we're heading east to Newport!

I'm hoping to head both North and East if I can swing two weeks off but not in a row. I would like to try something different then Block Island and Montauk. I'm thinking about Newport as well. I want to see and do something different the lock trip is just a relaxing trip and inexpensive trip as well.

Three months, I hadn't really given that much thought. I'm looking forward to the boat show that usually means the season is coming soon. I have a few projects I need to get working on. Nothing as big as last year but I still needs to get done before I splash.

Winter just started last week.

Just finally winterized the motors on Sunday.......put the little boat to bed 3 weeks ago.

10 weeks and we will be back in the game.

I know I felt a change in the lenght of the day.

Dave you are spot on with regard to the lock trips. Slow and steady, not alot of traffic. A good break from the pressures. Very pleasant scenery.
IMHO Block is more of an accomplishment for 1st timers than people looking for a good time in a good environment. Way over rated. I'm thinking Newport and that area with the islands of Nantuket, M.V. might be a more worth while stop.

Dan I have made a couple of lock trips but never as far as Lake Champlain as I plan this time. Nantuket and MV are on my wish list if not next season some time in the near future.

10 weeks may feel like a life time if work doesn't pick up a little I need to stay busy to keep my mind off of the weather.

Dave, it's further to Lock 1 than it is to Montauk! The canals are

Block is a great destination, you don't have to deal with the crowds & tourists that crawl all over Newport/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard. I'll take Block over any of them any day.

We're going to Newport to see my sister, we'll stay at Goat Island, so we're not in the heart of craziness.

We made a trip this year to Shelter Island, Newport, Block, Provincetown, and a few other stops. Went whale watching in P-Town, it was quite a trip. Next year we are planning on doing a loop through the Chesapeake.

It's going to be a long three months...

Mike I enjoy doing the locks every few years it's something different. I have never experienced the "the crowds & tourists that crawl all over Newport/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard" once I have I may not want to return but I like to see new places I may hit block as well but it's not a must for a third year in a row.

I guess I'm biased. L.I. and Block are very expensive for what they offer and I am sure that the Nantucket, M.V. and Newport stops are as well. It seems everywhere else we have been we have had good power and water vs. what we got on most of the L.I. stops. 250v/50a lines were frequently below 200v and most were below 210.
Jersey seemed better and cheaper also.

I haven't been to Nantucket yet but I think my favorite destination in that direction at this point is Edgartown MV. I've been to Block several times and to me MV has a lot more to offer and if anything is quieter and less touristy than Block. Lots of areas to explore by dinghy, really nice town, can dinghy to the beach... Dock space there is extremely limited though so we always stay on a mooring which keeps the cost very reasonable also.

Dan, anywhere you go east of Port Jeff you will be paying around $5/ft. The marinas got together several winters ago and all agree to jack their prices up.

I have NEVER had an issue with electric at any of the marinas I have stayed at out east.

Danfords has the worst power on LI Sound. You can be on your boat looking directly at a huge power plant only to have you A/C units shut down from low voltage.

Pathetic that you have to start your genset just to keep the boat cool.

Mike if my plotting is correct it's 97.5 miles to Troy with out no wake zones (which there are) that would be about 5 hours and 45 min and about 115 gallons of fuel from there it's mostly no wake the rest of the way. This trip is just about a change of pace must like your trip to the Chesapeake last year. I enjoy doing the locks I find the history amazing and I haven't done this in a few years.

Dave, it's a great trip, we used to go up to Champlain once a year. If you ever get the chance, continuing up to the St. Lawrence and down through the 1000 Islands makes for a wonderful excursion.

A lot of the towns along the canal have free dockage (with electric & water).

I have stayed at a couple of free town docks both Waterford and Fort Edwards it was a lot of fun. I don't have time for such a long trip as you mentioned but I do plan to do the great loop some day when we retire or hit lotto which ever comes first. I will find a nice trawler that gets great 2-4 MPH and spend months on board at a time and return home for breaks then pick up where we left off. God willing this will become a reality not just a dream. There is no way my job will allow me to do this until I'm retired so it's a long way off.

Let's all hope the price of oil doesn't explode again but things are already looking bad.

Newport is a great destination. One of our favorite trips was there.

I agree with everything said about pricing and crowds. I've heard MV is not cheap but everyone who goes says it is great.

We've done the Jersey shore the last two years and will likely do it again. We won't go further east than FI unless our club plans a rendezvous out that way. All contingent on whether we still have the boat. If not our cruising days are over since we'll be stepping down to a day boat.

""Only 3 months to go!""...And you haven't even been Grumpy yet...

We've been to Newport several times, and MV twice. Both are nice destinations and you won't go wrong with either.
