New to boating and considering our first boat...must be a mid-life thing.

It will be a weekend retreat berthed on the Hudson River near Waterford. Used for 1-2 day canal and river trips.

We are looking at a 1989 2357 Montego. Seems to be the perfect size and has all the "creature comfort" options.

Any past or present owners out there with words of wisdom?

Thank you!

Doug

OK, I'll be the first.
Can't give you any opinions on the boat, but what boating experience do you have? If little or none, are you going to take at the very least, a boating safety class? Take that first, in a classroom setting, not online.
Follow up with a Seamanship class.
You can hook up with either the Coast Guard Aux or the US Power Squadron. Both offer a number of very worthwhile classes.
Do you have any seasoned boating buddies that can "show you the ropes" of boating.

I have the one size...up the 2557...Love the boat...For 1 or 2 day trips you will be happy with that size...
What engine and outdrive does it have?...

We are taking a classroom boating safety class next week given by the State of NH. Thanks for the advice on the Seamanship class. Any boat we get will not go into the water until '09 and I will definitely find an experienced boater when the time comes.

That's great to hear. I'm not up on what the CG Aux offers other than Safety & Seamanship classes, but the Power Squadron offers Navigation, Piloting, Engine Maintainance, Weather, Electronics and I believe a few others.

I've been boating all my life in all kinds of boats and didn't take any classes until I was in my 40's and 50's. I've taken 5 classes and all were well worth the time and effort

The usual...someone asks a reasonable question and gets hit with "take a boating safety class"

He didn't seem to mind...even thanked me for suggesting the Seamanship class.
