Other Winterizing Activities

Better yet, HD is now stocking 25 pound bags of calcium chloride (as ice melt) in the Northeast...same stuff as damp rid and most likly a lot cheaper

Calcium, that's a fact - pulls moisture out of the air nicely, it is used on dirt roads in the summer, it pulls moisture from the air and dampens the top of the dirt road, thus keeping dust at bay. Also charcoal is good for odors, try and find the kind with no flavor I.E. mesquite... also try and find without any ignition additive - good old plain charcoal.

Larry B, I tried the newspapers in my fridge, the comics section, but it left a funny smell in it...sorry, it was too tempting. Does anyone leave their tv's (lcd or plasma) on board for the winter? I'm not sure if I should take mine out or leave it in?

interesting question.... I've always left my tv in the boat, but it was already past its retirement age and should have been replaced years ago. I guess if I had a newer tv on the boat (sometime in the future), I'd be inclined to remove it although it may not be an issue. Be interested to see what others who have those types of tv's on the boat do.

I leaave my other electronics on board and haven't had a problem, just wasnt' sure if the tv was any different.

Leave boats outside during the winter with camper tops up in the Northeast? I would be very wary of THAT dealer and his boats!

In Vermont, I've been using Calcium Chloride (bought in bulk) in Damp-Rid containers for years and it works great. 7 containers for a 26' cuddy cabin boat. I also use 4 Golden Rods to reduce moisture. The boat is stored in a barn with a gravel floor.

Moth balls seem to work well keeping Micky and his friends from establishing residency. And I find there is no odor in the Spring.

This is an old thread! I replied last year that I leave the extinguishers onboard but after boats in our club were vandalized last fall I got back onboard and removed mine. The vandals sprayed them all over the inside of the boats.

Good to hear back on this thread again.

I'm not too concerned about vandalism, but in today's society you can never be too trusting anymore.

Have already started packing some plastic bins on the boat and when she comes out, they'll go in my basement.

It's amazing how much stuff we take off the boat! With the exception of the plates, utensils and pots from the galley, we pack up just about everything, including the tv's, electronics, loose sofa cushions and the island berth mattress and take them home for cleaning and storage. We also take the 2 chairs down from the bridge and store them in the forward cabin.

The refrigerator is cleaned and the bins are taken home and put in the dishwasher. I also remove and clean the rubber gaskets, dry them and put them back before propping the doors open. It's amazing how much mildew gets on and behind those gaskets.

In the spring all the cabinets are wiped down, the headliners are vacuumed and everything is put back for the season.

This year we are taking more off than we usually do…Our thought process is a lot of it won't return:)
