I'm finally getting around to installing a new windlass that I've had my eye on. I had an old manual electric windlass that hauled my rode, but the chain and anchor had to be retrieved by hand. Obviously, that got old and needed to be rectified, right? I've been working on this for over a week during my spare time and am ready to install.

So I'm replacing this

(sorry, the pic was taken after the removal process started...)

with this Lewmar Pro Series 1000 windlass.

I'll be at Riverboat tomorrow rigging the new system. It should be a fairly simple bolt-in process, but the electrical connections may present the challenge du jour. I've got 20 some feet of 6 AWG cable to pull, plus a 1/2 washdown line for the bow. If anyone's going to be in the neighborhood and can lend a hand for 15-30 minutes feeding wire while I pull, I'd love the assistance.

BTW, I picked up 300 ft of 5/8 inch 8 plait line and 30 ft of 5/16 chain for the new windlass. I'll have a lower helm control switch and a wireless remote for bow or flybridge operation. A recessed washdown hose canister will also be installed.

I'll post final pics of the install after I'm done.

Al,

Wish I could be there, but I've already made arrangements with a friend to bring my long neglected crab pots back in for the season. Next week, we start harvesting pink meat. I hope to fill the freezer and the smoker.

Nice work on the new pulpit and all. It looks beautiful! Dale should be out there on Sunday relaxing and I bet you could enlist his help. I might be out on Saturday evening as well.

Thanks Dave and Liz.

I was able to get to the boat and got the unit mounted and wires and washdown hose pulled with the help of my slip neighbor.

As soon as I mounted the new unit, it made the existing sampson post and stainless chocks and trim look terrible by comparison, so I had to remove those to buff back to their original lustre. I'm probably opening pandora's box here...next the rails will look dull. Where do you stop the buffing!!

Got 50% through the wiring before 8PM when the dinner bell rang. Had another great 20oz Prime Rib dinner with all the trimmings at Happy Harbor for $20...what a great deal on a great meal.

During dinner, a family health issue required me to return home immediately, so I'll have to finish the job next weekend. Gotta have it done by 4/16 when my brother comes in town from Michigan for a week of fishing!!

Thanks for the update. That Prime Rib Dinner sounds fabulous. Maybe I'll make it over there in a couple of weeks!

Got to the boat yesterday and completed the windlass installation. I needed to finish the electrical connections and secure the wiring and wash down hose. I'll install the flush-mounted bow washdown hose canister in the near future.

I had removed the sampson post, bow chocks and deck plate for buffing since they looked so dull sitting next to the new shiny stainless. I found that the deck plate and bow chocks are actually chrome plated bronze and wouldn't shine up, so replacements are on order. I guess they're due after 33 years of service.

The 8-plait rode and chain flow very smoothly through to the anchor locker and take up a surprisingly small space compared to the 3 strand rode. The wireless remote operates from anywhere on the boat. All in all, I couldn't be happier with the results. Later this week, I hope to finish up a few small jobs, clean her up and take her for a test spin.

What a massive improvement. Your old windlass looks like the one I took off my boat, except the plastic housing was cracked and the steel had rusted out.

You're going to love that setup. +1 on the brightwork.
