Since we bought our Carver 370 the overboard discharge has never worked. We've checked all the plumbing, the macerator and the pump all seem to be in good working condition, but when activated it just runs/pumps dry.

Could it be the pump is working but not working to its maximum and therefore not enough to get the flow going?

Any help would be appreciated.

below water line ? is the seacock open ?

what kind of pump ? damaged impeller ? you say the macerator and the pump ? separate units?

Before anyone here can offer a suggestion, we're going to have to know how your sanitation system is configured, beginning with the toilet. Toilet goes to where? Are there any selector valves in-between? Do you have a holding tank? Where is the vent line for the holding tank? Is it open? Have you checked that the vent line can freely vent all the way from the tank to the through hull where it exits the boat? How is the pumpout configured? Is there a "Y" valve anywhere in the pumpout line? Is the seacock open at the through-hull fitting? If you've run the macerator pump without pumping any water through it for more than 30 seconds or so, you've fried the impeller inside the pump, and possibly ruined the pump itself.

It's going to take some detailed investigation on your part to crawl around the boat and map out the system, to see how everything inter-relates. Without knowing that, it's difficult to come up with any sort of possible solution to your problem.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check the answers with the Captain and let you know.

My money's on a "Y" valve that's not in the correct position for suction. At least it's an easy fix!
