Hi Everyone,

I have a 2006 Sundancer 360 and it has a name painted on the transom. It was done by SS# in Lindenhurst.

My question is, how hard is it to remove the name completely? I will be proposing to my almost fiance' and i want to propose via unveiling the new name of the boat. I'm calling her "Will you marry me".

Any ideas on how to get the painted name off easily and completely?

Get some acetone and try a small area at first. Acetone will soften and remove paint.
 
If it were my boat, I would call a professional that does boats on a regular basis. I know it is not a big deal of a job, but….. SS3/MM I believe uses ART Signs. I know they did my boat. They are located in West Babylon – 631-422-0025
 
Oven cleaner is supposed to do a good job.

easy off oven cleaner. it works...

spray it on the painted letters, one section at a time, give it a few minutes, scrub and rinse with a lot water. repeat if needed.

that's how i removed the name on my boat a few years ago, and the paint was pretty recent / thick... BIG letters too! didn't harm the awlgrip (hatteras are painted over gel coat), no reason it will harm gc, I've heard of many using it on gc.

Ok..spoke to a person named Dave from ART Signs and he actually remembers painting the current name on my boat.

Real nice guy and very helpful.

He suggested a mixture of acetone and figerglass compound used gently but persistently.

He also said that oven cleaner can work but it can be nasty stuff if not used carefully and that it mat turn the gelcoat a slightly different hue.

I think I'm just going to hire him to do the whole thing.

Thanks for all your help. Honk your horn if you see a 360 with "will you marry me" as the name.
 
That name "will you marry me" reminds me of a name of a Boat that I really like . "Goodbye Judy". Opposite end of the equation though.

I think I recall seeing that boat docked at the Westhampton Town Dock, or maybe a similar name with the same connotation. I do know that my Ex. was such a conniving b!^<* that there would be no way I would even want to see her name on my boat, even if it was a good by. My current wife Linda of 14 years married did not want her name on our boat… She’s a keeper !!

“Will you marry me” is a cool name. Good Luck… I am sure she will say yes.

We plan on having our wedding on a beach on LI. It will be a very causual clam bake. Catered Clam bake by one of the groups that do that. Can't wait.

This acetone stuff seems to be used on everything. A friend / RO uses it to clean fenders. Takes off everything and he then takes plain old dish washing liquid as a final step, I guess to remove the acetone residue. After seeing this, I will never buy fender cleaner again.
 
I also use acetone on fenders............does a great job!

Brad, Acetone leaves no residue. It's primary application is a special purpose thinner, cleaner, remover. It's advantage is a very high evaporation rate.
 
You have to be careful with acetone, it's strong stuff and I wouldn't clean everything with it. A guy told me once he saw a PVC dinghy ruined by an acetone cleaning.
 
I used it (acetone) on fenders once......it left them a bit " sticky "....... I had to wash them a few times with boat soap to get them back to normal.

I agree with John......becareful its strong stuff.

The Acetone most likely is very harsh on rubber fenders, but so are pilings. Making it easy on ones self to keep-em clean looking works for me. As Mike says Acetone does not leave a residue, but I think it may eat a small layer off which could cause the stickiness. Maybe that’s why it was suggested to me to wash with detergent immediately following the Acetone cleaning. They do come back looking like new and if it eats the fender away after a few years, so what, better than struggling with that over priced fender cleaning stuff that really only works for minor dirt stains.

Got say after using that stuff I feel like I had a double shot... must use in well a ventilated area. The fumes can't be good. Wonder why woman are always using nail polish remover, I think it is a form of Acetone. Hey honey you just did your nails, doing them again today? Time to call Acetone Anonymous …… [:-hypnotized]
 
I have one question in reference to your chosen boat name "Will You Marry Me" ? That one question is "when you sell this boat and buy a different one, most likely a larger vessel, what do you name that boat??????? I quess it would be "Will You Marry Me II" it could cause a problem.....

Hey Jercoppola,

This is my second marriage and I made lots of mistakes on the first one..... I settled....

I know it sounds cliche' to say that this absolutely will work but I have truly met my soulmate. I have become one of those men I used to hate (and envy deep inside). If, god forbid, something happens, the boat has so much sentimental meaning to me that I'd never get rid of it. I'd also keep the name. Maybe I'd change the "will" to "why'd"...lol...... But it ain't gonna happen :)
