After looking at Haverstraw, SPBM, Patsy's and PBM I decided Patsy's Bay was the place for me. I have young kids and often single handle my boat. I was staying at PBM as it was the first year of owning a new boat purchased there but decided I would move to the place that best suited our needs.
Haverstraw Marina was just too far to walk, too loud on the docks (sailboats, aluminum) and too impersonal so I quickly ruled it out. Stony Point Bay Marina I have heard too many horror stories about the management and could not even be open minded although it did have a lot to offer and perhaps I should have been more open minded.
PBM has an exceptional group of boaters and because of its small size it is simply unique. I could see why people would stay there forever as it is such a close knit group. Butch and Warren were especially helpful for me but everyone was great. There are great boaters at Patsy's as well that I met -however it is much larger so I cant imagine knowing everyone the way you would at PBM.
The management & office at PBM JD & Rick & Tara were very attentive, friendly and professional U really could not ask for or get more-Steve (service) is moody hit or miss. Patsy's has a great reputation and you can immediately see why after a very short period of time-Jimmy is very accommodating. With the uncertainty at PBM/Sufside 3 I would think Patsy's would have a general advantage in management at this point. Otherwise, it may have been a push as far as management goes.
Tide is not a concern at PBM about 15” more water it would seem- I saw 18” on my depth at Patsy's so I personally would avoid low tide (about 4 hours per day) even with IO's. The other difference is the current. At PBM the current would simply take my boat away from the finger by the time I left the helm to get off the boat to tie up. That made it difficult to dock myself if the tide was going out (about 45% of the time) so it limited my usage somewhat. At Patsy's Bay current is not an issue and it is- relatively speaking-a piece of cake to dock single handling as the boat does not move at the slip. It is also a lot calmer when you are tied up at Patsy's. PBM is more exposed so U can bounce around a bit in your slip and the docks can be an amusement ride of sorts at times-a bit worrisome with little kids.
The facilities at Patsy's with the pool, playground, volley ball, Grill, Ice Cream, 22 acres to stroll vs the well maintained beach area with the Panco tanks view at PBM favors Patsy's IMO. I think balancing the facilities and current against the greater depth and smaller (likely) closer knit community would be the major distinctions that I have observed to be most relevant although future management at PBM would be of concern. In think in my very specific case it was a no brainier and clearly one size does not fit all but Patsy's has a lot going for it.
