Folks in Port Deposit are being asked to evacuate the area from Main St. tonight. The dam will have 50 gates opened this weekend. We, who navigate the bay, will have to deal with all the crap that has piled up behind the dam on the Susquehanna as it floats down the bay. Be careful out there for the next couple of weeks!!!

Thanks for the heads up. My son-in-law and daug. are big Penn State fans and headed for St. College tomorrow. I think they are going out west in Md. and coming in that way to miss Harrisburg, and the susquehanna. A tow truck will make a fortune in those wet parking fields around the stadium.

I plan on driving up rt322 tomorrow, which runs right along the Susquehanna and then the Juniata. Still haven't been able to figure out if it will be open, due to the flooding. I did read somewhere that most of the grass fields will not be open for stadium parking.

Also note: Route U.S. 1 over the Conowingo Dam has been closed. They need the space on the dam for heavy equipment to operate to clear debris. I'm guessing that they are just plucking the stuff out of the upstream side, then swinging the crane around, and dropping it over the downstream side. Guess where that stuff goes next?

I wouldn't want to be anywhere in Port Deposit right now. I'm not sure if I'd want to be in Perryville or Havre de Grace, either. They almost lost the dam in 1972 with huricane Agnes. This doesn't look a whole lot better. If it busts, it's bye-bye to 2 or 3 towns.

It's probably fine, as one of the issues in 1972 was some stuck gates. Those problems have supposedly been resolved. But, I personally woudn't want to hang around to find out.

I was planning on running from Kent Narrows to Georgetown Yacht basin on the Sassafrass River this saturday. I was taking out a wedding party before the wedding.

My challenge is do it go or not? I am torn because they were looking forward to being on he boat taking pictures and enjoying the ride. I have IPS drives, which face forward, and am somewhat concerned of hitting something. I am usually extremely careful but anything can happen.

What would you all do?

Van -

Maybe you can take them southward to St. Michael's? Maybe the debris won't be as far south as Kent Narrows and St. Mike's by then?

As a last resort, you can at least take them out and idle around the Kent Narrows area. If most of them are non-boaters, they're just glad to be out on a boat, and most won't really care what particular area they see.
If you just idle around Kent Narrows, I would think that idle speed shouldn't cause too much damage if you hit somthing. ....at least not to the hull. Not sure about those forward facing props.

Alk, you may want to consider another route for the game. The 322 bridge over the Susquehanna is closed and will remain so until flood waters subside. The river isn't supposed to crest in Harrisburg until sometime Sat. at between 29-30 feet which is MAJOR flood stage. This will be within a few feet of the record levels of Agnes in '72. Seriously, consider going west and coming in from there, it will likely be faster. Also, there are so many roads closed around here that you could get trapped for an extended period in heavy traffic. Large section of the PA turnpike are closed, as are sections of I-81, 22-322, 422 etc. Hershey is almost impassable right now. The gov. was on TV urging people to stay off the roads except for essential travel. We've had two die on the roads up here from the flooding.

I heard from a friend that the game may be canceled or post poned, better check.
At any rate, be safe.

I'm thinking of going the other way and getting out of here and heading to DE to the boat for the weekend, no flooding there.

We are headed to Georgetown because the wedding Is at Kitty Knight house. I am headed up with my wife and picking them up for a local ride around the Sass. Just not sure how the bay is going to be with debris

Last Sat. evening the water coming thru the dam looked like choclate milk, I can only imagine what it will look like after all the rain thats fallen up here. I'd say keep a sharp look out and don't run at night for a while.

I don't known, Van. It'll probably be pretty bad. If you have the time, ... a lot of time, ...maybe you can idle up to Georgetown. At least a debris strike won't be as bad.
I can't imagine it being anything other than bad out there with back to back heavy rain events....Irene and Lee. ...with second or third worst all-time flooding on the Susquahanna.

thanks, I didn't realize it was that bad. We'll keep an eye on things.

On the news they just showed a broken up house floating down the Conestoga Creek, towards the Susquehanna. Not sure how long it will take, but that house is headed towards the bay. I'm guessing it would do extensive damage to an IPS drive.

Thanks,
I believe I will not take the chance. I know it will dissapoint our friends but its not worth taking the chance.

Van I live in Chesapeake City.

The water is a mess right now.

There were submerged logs floating in the basin last night, and we're just getting the back-flow from around Turkey Point.

I think you made the right choice.

Van, is the wedding outside? As of last Sunday, the Kitty still has not put their big tent back up.

Was out on the bay Monday and Tuesday. Our track was up the western side of the bay from just the Magothy River to Stoney Creek (about 4 miles). Trash was so thick on Monday that we never got about 6 knots and were constantly dodging logs and huge rafts of limbs. On our return trip on Tuesday the the bay was much cleaner. There were still many large and small pieces of debris, but only about 10% of what was there on Monday.

I'm not sure where it all went so fast, but at this rate most of the hazards should be gone in a couple of more days.

Mike

I am SO hoping we can get down to Annapolis this weekend - it's supposed to be beautiful!
