What's your plans for the summer?
This thread has been extremely quiet over the last few months! I would like to hear where everyone is headed this summer. Are people not using their boats? Or are you so busy using them that no one has time to post anything?

Four boats from HRCC will be in the upper Chesapeake July 7 - 13.

Inner Harbor 7th - 11th, then down to Herrington Harbor South the 11th - 13th.

Mike,

If you and your group would care to spend some time on the hook in a Chesapeake Bay anchorage that is always rated as one of the Best of the Bay by Chesapeake Bay Magazine just let me know. We'll be there on vacation July 2-11.

Mike, let us know, you never know when plans change.

Well since you asked Van,

I want to take a trip from South Jersey down to the Chesapeake or at miniumum the rivers at the northern branch.

I currently boat out of Avalon NJ and usually just hang around downn area, from Ocean City to Cape May.

I have never taken the trip across the Delaware Bay up to the C&D.

I just want to be sure I am prepared. I hear alot of bad stories about the bay and it gets me a bit concerned.

I know the basics, come out of the Cape May canal out to the channel (staying out of shipping channel) follow incoming tide up to C&D over to Chesteertown.

any input is welcome.

what about not running all the way out to the channel in the Delaware Bay? I know there some shallow shoals.

I think you mean Chesapeake City. Chestertown is way up the Chester River. Cheapeake City is along the C&D Canal, just into Maryland.

I just came back from a weekend at the Kent Island Yacht Club hosted by the Classic Yacht Club of America.

We will be in Great Oak Landing in July, Baltimore in August, and Chesapeake Bay Bridge Marina in September.

In between those runs, we will be playing on the Sassafras.

Cassy,

Like Craig said, you are referring to Chesapeake City on the western end of the C&D, not Chestertown. The Cape May Canal is no problem, Just stay in the middle (allowing for traffic to pass as necessary) and favor the north side as you approach the ferry landing because it does shoal on the south side. The ferrys always have there engines running so don't think that they are about to depart just because you notice that. If, however, you do notice a ferry that is underway, avoid it!

Once in the Delaware Bay just plot the shortest "straight line" route to the enterance of the C&D, there's plenty of water in the Bay so you don't needt to be worried about hitting the bottom as log as you stay away from the shoreline. The Delaware Bay can get VERY NASTY so watch the weather. If there is an incoming tide and the wind is blowing from the north, abort! You won't have a pleasant trip under those conditions. When the Delaware Bay is behaving itself it is normally a very boring trip.

When you do finally get into the Chesapeake Bay and see all it tributaries, anchorages and points of interest you'll learn why so many boaters who prefer cruising love the Bay. Let us know if you need more info. We're here to help.

Cassy,

When do you plan to make your run? Like everyone has said, it is a easy run, but try to avoid running when the wind is against the tide.

I will be in avalon alot in July (That is except for the week I will be in the Cheasepeake!)

Craig,
How was your visit to KIYC this weekend? I am a member and saw your boat their Fri. evening. We were on a outing with several members on Sat. to Rock Hall for lunch as well. I heard you had 19 boats at the yacht club? Hope they treated you well!

Cassy,
As Mike said it is a easy trip but going through the Cape May Canal and approaching the Ferries you need to stay close to the starboard side, there are mud flats to your port. Once leaving the canal follow the markers out and then head straight toward the C&D you should be fine.

The water coming out of the canal can be confused at times and can make for a tough ride for a while. Once you get a little ways up the Del. Bay it becomes a fairly easy run. But as everyone says try and time it so you can run an incoming tide on the way up.

Chesapeake Inn on the C&D canal is a very good first stop. It is a fun place especially on weekends. Then from their, depending on how much time you have, there are multiple options from anchorages to resort marinas. You will be glad you made the trip. The Chesapeake is the best cruising grounds on the East Coast if not the country.

I just towed the boat down to Duffy Creek on the Sassafras river, will be there most weekends in June and July - Lloyd Creek, Still Pond, Fairlee - all of the usual spots. After about five years of Bay boating only, decided to return to Avalon new Jersey for August. Most weekends will find us anchored at Corson's Inlet park, or on the beach right inside of Townsends inlet - afternoons at one of the restaraunts in Sea Isle, Wildwood or Cape May.

I've done the trip up and down the bay a dozen or so times - used to go out in the main channel, but now run 'across the flats' by making a striaght line from the west end of the Cape May canal right up to the Ship John light. There is plenty of deep water there, shorter course than going out to the channel, calmer water - and closer to the Maurice and Cohanssey Rivers if anything goes wrong with the boat, or weather. Only drawback is all of the fishing boats you have to weave around if th stripers are biting. Take a look at a chart, and you will see there are some shoals well west of where you will be if you take this route.

Van, we had a great weekend at KIYC. The folks in your club treated us very well and a good time was had by all. The currents running through there made docking a bit of a challenge.

We are sittin in Solomons now with a short trip to Little Choptank on Tues for an anchor, then to Cambridge Yacht Club, one night, another anchor after that and the last 2 nights at Knapps Narrows Marina.
Hot this week, but no T-storms predicted so far.

We are headed out July 17th for 2 weeks. Headed to Cape Charles, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Tides inn and Crisfield. We have about 10 boats or so going from our Yacht club. Looking forward to it

Crisfield. I got stuck there for a few days one time. At least they have a pool!

While you're making that loop, and if your schedule allows, Salt Ponds is a pretty nice place. Especially on weekends with live music and pool-side service.

"Crisfield. I got stuck there for a few days one time. At least they have a pool!"

Ditto that! At least the weekend we were there was the weekend of the Annual Crab Feast.

No such luck for me. There wasn't squat going on. We did laundry just for entertainment. On day 3 we said the heck with the weather and made a run for Solomons to get out of there. 3 days in Crisfield is two too many.
