The water pipes on my 33 1991 Carver Aft cabin are starting to crack. I have cut, spliced, and clamped the system in 4 different places in the last 2 years using a larger piece of rubber water pipe & stainless clamps. The fix seems to holds but again has cracked in a different place. Last time in the wall at 3 am, and a 3 hr fix. There seem to be no correct size parts on the market for a easy fix. As I have 2 heads, shower and 3 sinks, & a ice maker the cost to repair the total system by a compendent plummer was quoted at over $1500.00. Has anyone found a better fix to the problem.

I wonder if they are cracking from freezing in winter.
I have made changes to my 1997 carver plumbing using the fittings and flex pipes from home depot. They do sell PEX and sharkbite fittings but piping is only semirigid. The trick is to cut he pipe in a mid section and from that point use all new fittings and pipes to replace the original fittings that are hard to find.
All that being said it will be very labor intensive. Either pay the plumber or do it yourself. Using the new type fittings and hoses is quite simple, when you can get at stuff.

It is not from freezing. It is the polybutyl piping breaking down. Do they have a 1/2" sharkbite fitting.

The fitting that were used are called Flair-it fitting and they are readily available just Goggle it. I bought from this company in the past more then once I'm not promoting them in any way I just had good luck with them in the past. I had a very hard time finding the fittings until I found out what they where called then I was very easy to locate on-line. As I mentioned in your other thread the Pex works fine using these fitting as well and it very easy to work with.

Interesting point about freezing, Bruce - I've never had to change any of my water lines although a couple of fixtures have gone bad over the years...

I used sharkbites on my 1988 32 Montego. These should be the same lines as they are standard sizes. 1/2" is the size. Get a good quality cutter to get crisp straight cuts.

Re-do the whole system. I did my old boat in blue and red and plan to do the same this winter. A 100' roll is about $15-$20 retail at a home center.

I am so impressed with the stuff that I am using it in my home remodel for everything.

Hope it helps!

Sharkbite is great for Pex put I don't know that it works with the current tubing he has in place however the Flair-it works on both. If I were going to replace everything I would probably switch to sharkbite simply because it's easier to find at the local store. This said it's more money for the fitting and most of the fitting that he has in place can be reused they only go bad if they freeze and crack the tubing can go bad just do to age. From what I have read this tubing goes bad the more you use it. I figure I only use the boat 6 months a year and with no water in the system the rest of the year it should last a long time. It is very easy to replace if I must when the time comes.
