I am going on a fling next Wednesday.
Any restaurants, places to anchor or related info would be a great help.
First time I am attempting to cross.

Are you heading to Lucaya directly? It's very developed and you'll find no shortage of restaurants and shops. Not much anchoring in the area. How long are you staying? Do you have plans to go other places around the Abacos or Grand Bahama? Is that a "firm" schedule so that no matter what the weather, the fling leaves on Wednesday?

Is your boat over 30' and if so, do you have your US Customs sticker?

I've only anchored in two places around GBI; one near Old Bahamas Bay, which really sucked, and just inside the Grand Lucaya Waterway, which wasn't too bad. Very remote with little to offer other than a place to spend a night.

I prefer to just get a slip at Port of Lucaya and stay there and take advantage of the restaurants and bars.

But, I have to say, GBI is one of my least favorite places in the Bahamas for anything more than a place to clear Customs on the way in and fuel up on the way out. (and wait for good crossing weather)

OBB is lame other than being a safe, of not over-priced, harbor. But for a short trip Lucaya would be fine for someone looking to see the more "commercial" part of the Bahamas. It's very, very touristy.

I do have some time flexibilty. If we are not able to leave on Wednesday.
I will cancel the reservation and head to the keys.
This is a fling, so they are organizing it.
Probably not do any cruising other than day trips.
My boat is under 30ft.

I never, ever, make reservations. One never knows what the conditions will be like.

And as for that back-up plan of yours for the Keys, uh, I've done that before. It's not a bad plan at all!

Either way, have a great and safe trip!

Port Lucaya is a bit of a tourist trap but there is supposed to be a new upscale restaurant there called Flying Fish. It has received rave reviews so I'd check it out.
We passed through Lucaya recently as a part of our drive East on the island while waiting for a weather window.

If you are there a few days renting a car and driving will be a good idea to kill some time. The straw market in Lucaya gets old fast and don't bother with the one in Freeport it's a depressing ghost town of a straw market. All of those people left the Freeport market and moved to Lucaya.
When you drive, and you will want to, remember they drive on the left. Stay left and you will be good to go. If you intend to drive out to Bahama John's call to check their hours. We did not but lucked out and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great beach there, the beer is cold and the food is great. A simple bbq shack on the beach.
Have a safe trip!

Thanks for the info!
BTW, my reservation cost me a 75 dollar deposit. I can afford to lose it.
No matter what happens,my wife and I get to spend a week on the boat.

it is great trip, go and enjoy. It was my first trip and we still look at the pics and remember the good times.

Depending on circumstances and weather, go back via Bimini to Lauderdale? And BTW the Flying Fish is where the Ferry House was and the Grand Bahama Yacht Club is in the tank with electrical issues. Not sure of it's status at this time.

Hopefully all goes well and I will have some nice pics to post!

Bad luck
I used the boat today, just had a gimble bearing replaced.
Ran fine anchored, went to get on plane, heard a grinding noise and will not shift into gear.
Doubtful it can get fixed by Tuesday.
Will fly to Jamaica and plop my (_i_) on a beach!

I hate it when that happens. Where you headed to in Jamaica? Negril?

Probably Montego bay, great beach close to the airport.
Also scotchies, best jamaican jerk on the planet is there.
I have a cab driver that drives us all over when we go, get this his name is graham kraker.
I will speak to my mechanic monday, if the boat can be fixed by wednesday we may head up to st. augustine.

I know the fling people well, talk to Richard and ask him to apply your deposit to another fling. Also
I suggest that you bypass that fling and take one to Bimini, MUCH better.

good luck

They actually cancelled the trip due to weather.
They wiull give me a credit.
Graham is picking me up at the airport in montego bay wednesday at noon!
