On my last trip to the Delta I found this area on the San Joachim River with many wooden pilings. They are right across from the Hilton house and they are under water at high tide and not visible at all.

A friend hit those pilings a couple of years ago. Fortunately damage was limited to a bent prop. They really are dangerous. Other than that one tall one, they are underwater at high tide, and not close to land.

It is best to stay out of that area completely unless you are in a bass boat! It is "Little Venise Island" [flooded.] I like to "explore" an area at minus tide when the most hazards are visible. I mark ones important to me on my GPS. When in doubt, stay out!

I was pretty sure those were on my charts.

Yes indeed, that row of piles across Venise Cut apprears on the NOAA Charts. It's shallow in there and fun to explore with a dink. Better row though, too many weeds for an outboard.

I've always noticed that area, but never ventured in due to concerns of shallow water...

It must have been a tract that flooded years ago..? Don't know any history on it.

Yes Mitch. It was part of Venice Island before the channel was cut through. After the channel, it became Venice Tip. Over the years it has eroded from wake, wave and current action. I've never read of a levee break along there, but that too may have contributed to the erosion.

Yes, Venise Is. was cut in two in order to dig out the deep water shipping channel to Stockton back in the 1930's. I don't think a new levee was ever built at the cut. If you row around on the inside of this area you will find remnants of the farm that used to be there. One of the fig trees still survives as well as some other fruit trees and ornamentals. On the other side of the old levee (as viewed in the photo above) the southeast side of this island is called Three River Reach. It a popular anchorage. There is a low spot on that southeast corner near the sandy beach where you can row to the inside of the island on high tide.
