I'm looking at a vacation on the SF bay the end of April into May. We will try to do Benicia and Martinez the first days of May, Sausalito May 5 and 6th and on to SF to catch some of the Giants games, from there perhaps Jack London Square for the Jazz shows .

These are loose, early plans. We are flexible at this point. If any of you are on the water during this time, it would be nice to meet you.

Monterey10, Our boat, the LuSea, is berthed at Jack London in the east basin. We have been
spending a lot of time on it and cruising the bay and delta. Are you on a trailer or do you
have a slip on the bay? BTW, it is a Meridian 411. Let us know when your plans firm up and
stop by and say hello! Karl

We're trailering up from Capitola. We'll probably launch at Coyote point. We've stayed at the marina right next to Jack London square. It's nice being right there. The only complaint is the sound of the train going by until late in the evening.

Monterey10,

You do realize there's maybe a 1/2 to 3/4 mile walking distance each way to any restuarants, pubs or stores in Martinez (there is a bait shop with refeshments near the Marina)?

If you have the time, I'd consider you try to make it in a little deeper in to the Delta, to maybe Pittsburg, Antioch or Rio Vista...?

Just my 0.02....

I'm not oposed to traveling higher up into the delta. Of the three mentioned, Pittsburg, Antioc or Rio Vista, which would you recommend as being the most interesting.

Last year we enjoyed Benicia, Petaluma, Sausalito and SF because they were pretty towns within a short walk from the harbor.

I'd recommend Antioch first, because Humphrey's is directly adjacent to the visitor dock, and is about a quarter mile from the retail area downtown. There are a few antique stores, and good places to eat there are Rick's on Second (quite good, only open for lunch, and you should try to call ahead a few minutes), the Riverview Lodge (I miss back when the whole place leaned) and Wallace Arms. Downtown Antioch has more going on on an afternoon than in the evening, although I think there's sometimes a lively crowd at Wallace arms on weekend nights, and for a while, Humphrey's would have a band come in on I think Saturday nights.

Pittsburg just kind of has apartments in the area around the marina, although "New Mecca" is famous for it's good Mexican food, and there's one other pretty good restaurant that I forget the name of, a block east.

Rio Vista is a good one, The Point has pretty good food, Foster's Bighorn restaurant is a MUST, but downtown Rio Vista is just over a half mile from the guest docks at Delta Marina / The Point.

What type of interest were you most desiring; dining, retail stores, sightseeing, groceries, etc?

Monterey10, my wife and I trailered up to the Delta from Los Angeles last September. We left out of Stockton enroute to SF Bay/Golden Gate Bridge when we got holed up in Pittsburg for 2 days. They have a brand new municipal marina and are revitalizing their downtown, which is a 5 minute walk from the marina. In addition, there is a bus stop right by the marina that will take you anywhere you want. The staff at the marina was incredibly nice and helpful. I would recommend them highly. We also stayed at Benicia, and if you haven't spent time there, I would recommend a stop. Nice historical town.

Plus I understand they (Pittsburg) have very good fuel prices, too (Martinez does NOT have fuel). I think you might enjoy Pittsburg more than Martinez, unless you wanted to take a little walk. Then I'd give the nod to Martinez, it has it all once you get past the Amtrak station. But I live there, and I'm very biased, LOL.

Concerning Pittsburg - that area at night, how does one say, it's not too bad, just be very careful?

We'll have a look at Pittsburg. It is nice to explore new areas if we can fit it in.

In addition to what Westdelta has said about Antioch, there is an AMTRAK station adjacent to the marina. You can catch that in the morning and go into Jack London Square and back in the evening or even into downtown Martinez. Beer Garden has great cheeseburgers downtown.

Good point. Antioch, Martinez, Emeryville, Jack London Square, they all have Amtrak stations very close to the marinas.

I think Martinez has more to offer than Pittsburg, town wise. At least it did a couple years ago. Man, a half mile is nothing, and certainly Rio Vista is no closer, or Benecia, for that matter. I think there ain't much of note in downtown RV.. rather go up river to Walnut Grove/ Locke, even Isleton. None of these are going to rival Napa or Petaluma for yuppie creature comforts. but that's the whole idea once you get past Benecia.
Why not make a tour on the asphalt sloughs and check 'em all out first hand? Makes a fun weekend.
