What are your general impressions of Pro-Line boats? I just got a 22 Pro-Line Walk vintage 2001. I've been told they are good boats, but who knows? It has a 200 HP Mercury OptiMax Saltwater series outboard with 230 hours. The engine has something called Smart Gauges or Smart Technology, something like that.

Is this a dependable and long-lived engine typically?

Thanks
John

John, Nice boat and outboard! Ive had very little problems with the ones ive surveyed. Did you have the boat surveyed?

John,
I had a 21' with a 175 that I had for years. Not the fit and finish of a Grady but a dependable solid boat. I'm sure with a 200 the boat's got some nice top end.
Enjoy,
Perry

Thanks for the replies guys. Actually did my sea trial on 2005 Pro-Line 23 Sport with 200 Merc. SW series with about 40 hours on her. I thought it underperformed. Top end 5,000 rpm at 28 mph cruise 3,800 rpm at about 20 mph. I've been told this boat/motor should get a good 30 mph cruise and nearly 40+ top end. Aluminum prop and needs 50 hour service. owner says it's never been tuned up. could that effect it that much? motor seemed to run like a top. also will a ss prop make that much difference?

Thanks, John

Did you have it surveyed?

Based on your other thread posting abut this you said the MPH is based on the speedo, I know it's an after thought but you should have brought a handheld GPS.

If that is the true speed and rpm something is wrong. How did the prop look? Years ago I had a proline 21 foot walk around, great boat, no problems.

My 21' w/175 w/ss prop did 42+mph to end. I would imagine a 23' w/200 aluminum prop should come close to my boat's speed. Probably not the correct prop for that motor.

Pro-Line says it's the correct prop that was sent with the motor, but he may have re-propped.

You should be able to read the prop info if you check carefully. It has to be the wrong prop. You're numbers just do not make sense.

Something is missing here. You can prop a boat for power or speed, not both at the same time. It depends on what the owner wants, there is no CORRECT prop. A boat propped for speed will be slow on the start but will be fast, one propped for power will jump up on plane (and rip a skiers arms off) but will have low speed. That does not mean that you can't find a prop that each individual is happy with. The motor manufacture can not specify the "correct" prop, you have to consider things like, dead rise, boat length, boat weight, and how much crap the owner has stored on the boat... Oh forgot.. how much crap is hanging on the bottom of the boat, some have their own ecosystem.

I never make comments about propping in my reports you may see things like "Port engine was not able to achieve maximum manufacturer's rated RPM. It is recommended that RPM issues be investigated by a person qualified in all aspects of engine performance and marine propulsion systems".

But then contrary to common beliefs its not the surveyors job to troubleshoot anything, they just report conditions... I remember reading a report (from a very unhappy buyer) recently that said "Valves need adjusted" followed by wording like "top of engine is noisy" the problem turned out to be a bad wrist pin. The recommendation was to "Adjust engine valves" Huge difference in repair cost for the buyer caused by the surveyors diagnosis. While most surveyors can be correct many times as we can do most things required from rebuilding re-glassing its just not correct to make statements that cant not be qualified without taking the time to make a detailed investigation which in this case requires some engine disassembly to make an accurate diagnosis... I have a 2000 23 WA. Blown off my lift during Hurricane Charley. Other than gell coats scratches she was fine. The only caution I have is this. The original had a 225 Merc Opti. I babied that engine flushed everytime, preventive maintenance etc. 330 hrs and she blew. I was pretty pissed. According to my mechanic 2000 was a bad yr for opti made some changes and reccomended I repowered w/ another 2006 opti. Smart Guages are great the 2006 is fuel efficient I am very happy. WOT 42 knt depending on load. As far as the boat I agree w/ above posts not a grady but dependable solid boat. If she can survive Charley I feel good about her
