I will be moving my boat to the LI Sound this year and wondering what if anything do you use on your props? I never used to use anything but the last few years I started painting them with a zinc paint. This year most of us on the Hudson had a ton of barnacles so I'm a little concerned making the move to salt water!
I have a good friend who has been g
Keeping him boat close to where I will be and he says he doesn't use anything and doesn't have any issues. I don't want to spend a fortune on prop speed unless this is the only thing that works.
What do you use and what are your thoughts?

i go naked, not a pretty site but it works fine
But i use my boat which helps keeps everything cleaner

I actually had you in mind when I posted this. I use my boat plenty as well so I was surprised last year. I'm not sure if the paint I used made it worse or if I should use it again. I have stripped them clean at this point so I'm not sure what to do. Obviously nothing would be quicker cheaper and easier but I don't want to have issues this season.

Dave
The wheels that are on my boat have/had some sort of coating put on by the PO. Don't think it was Propspeed as they were grey in color. Boats been in the water(salt) since last May and i will have it hauled sometime in April to have bottom cleaned, zinc's etc.. Will also have a new set of wheels installed uncoated.
I'll see if there is any substantive crap on them then
Im expecting ill need to haul a couple of times over the next months to 'tune' the new props and will keep an eye on growth. I wouldn't expect much until the water gets much warmer mid to late summer & ill take a swim to check and clean if needed

Im sure you'll get mixed feedback, some people swear by coatings. I think the weather conditions play a major roll,

We all use the zinc stuff. Cheap spray can at home depot.
Does it work? They come out clean, so I think it does.
I see guys using this now on any metal, trim tabs, shafts, etc.

I paint my pods with trilux and props with zinc spray.

I’m one of the guys who uses the Rustoleum galvanizing rattle cans on all the underwater metal. It all looked pretty clean when the boat came out of the water in Late November.

I used gray spray can this past year and it was the worst year ever but most people in my marina had the same issue!
I think I will do it again, besides I still have more then enough in my garage to do the boat again.

I've been using Pettit Prop Coat with great results. I always do two coats and props are definitely leaps and bounds better than doing nothing. I have stainless props on Mercruiser Alpha I Gen II's.

Dave, I hardly had any barnacles on my boat last season. There were a lot of mussels on my metal surfaces, where I didn't use the zinc paint. Where I used it, there were very few.

Make sure you use the correct zincs, now that you are in salt water.

I thought everyone had issues! Mine wasn't nearly as bad as others but bad enough!
I have always used zinc not magnesium it tried it once or twice and went but to zinc.
Looks like I will be going in late this year I decided not to go in until I return from Aruba in April. I hope to the the bottom painted this Sunday and the yard will wax while I'm on vacation. Season is around the corner should be a fun new year just made arrangements for a mooring ball in Lloyd harbor as well can't wait to get this show on the road.

You should be using aluminum in fresh/brackish water.

I hear Aruba is really nice, hope to get there someday!

This will be my first Aruba trip. I have stopped there while on a cruise but it was only for a day I'm looking forward to relaxing. I'm sure I will be feeling anxious about getting home and launching the boat.
BTW magnesium is the preferred anode for fresh water while it is a bit more expensive is works well it also only lasts a season because it works so well. My zincs could last a couple seasons because they aren't as effective but do the job well enough!

Where are you staying in Aruba? If you need any pointers, let me know.

I forget the name but the far end of town at an all inclusive.
