We are thinking of heading up to Providence to see the WaterFires and could use some local knowledge advice. It looks like the only marina within dinghy or walking distance of town is Old Harbor Marina, but their phone number is not in service. Is this place still open - perhaps under a different name?

Boat is 62' overall with 20' bridge clearance, so we could just make it under the hurrcane barrier.

Any other marinas that might work for us? We may have access to a car while in RI, so a good marina farther from downtown mught work too. We don't need a pool or any special ammenities, just a clean, safe slip with reasonable access to the city.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sea Gull,

There is a Marina just inside the Hurricane Barrier. It's right accross the st from my office but I don't know the name believe it or not. I think that's Old Harbor and it does have a few boats at it. I'll try to find it. Regardless your bridge clearance I would be VERY reluctant to pull a 62ft boat inside there. It is narrow and skinny water. The Providence to Newport ferry even hit it once when it was docking inside there (no longer running). There is nothing by way of transient dockage that I'm aware of in Providence that would not require a car to get to the Waterfire. One option might be Brewers Cove Haven which is in Barrington, RI. From there is about 15-20min easy drive to Prov. They could take you without a problem. Another option would be Port Edgewood. It's a few miles outside of Down Town. Would still need a car ride but would be quick. Check out www.portedgewood.com They list transient space on their website but not sure on accomodations as I've never been there. Hope that helps. Waterfire is fun and Prov is a great place. Hopefully as the city moves forward with waterfront redevelopment plans, there will be more options for boaters wanting to visit the city.

If Port Edgewood is the marina in Gaspee, I would second it. Calm and protected. There is a great Irish Pub/Restaurant in Gaspee that is a short walk from there.

Was there last week - at least at the restaurant. Doesn't look like the best facility in the world but do-able for an easy commute to WaterFires. You might want to call the restaurent (The Hot Club 401.861.9007) and they could probably head you in the right direction.
