Purasan Discharge

Put in a new Raritan Elegance with a Purasan treatement system this last Winter. I was wondering what to expect as far as color of the discharge when coming out of the thru hull?
 
Hm. Might turn out to be one major advantage of a catamaran hull! Out of sight, out of mind.
 
Color can range anywhere from milky white to "cafe con leche." (coffee with cream).
 
Even if you are watching for it you may never see the discharge from a Purasan. The discharge thru-hull on our boat is about six inches under the waterline. I've seen the cloudy discharge only once or twice in five years. It dissipates quickly outside the boat.
 
Thanks for the info Vic! Unfortuneately the thru-hull is above the waterline Yzer....maybe I see another Winter project on the list!!

Moving the discharge below the waterline involves far more than just a new through hull and plugging the old hole. For a start, you need a seacock so you can close it off and a vented loop so sea water cannot siphon in and flood the boat. If the sight of sewage bothers you, don't look at it. And remeber, it's nothing more than what you ate yesterday!

Mine is above the waterline and that's where it is staying.

That explains how you can stay out for 6 days. How difficult was the retrofit?
 
Mine is under the boat using the tru-hull with a lever. I have never seen any discharge even with my high power LED decorative lights on. It also draws the least amount of current of all the type 1 systems I am aware of. I also use the Hold-N-Treat and have a 36 gallon holding tank.

Not easy but that's because the 1955 26' pocket cruiser had very little space available and some carpentry was required. The Purasan treatment unit is a little larger than a group 27 battery box. I had to locate it a couple of inches in back of the manual head. The longest hose run is only about 4 ft. The fresh water and discharge thru hulls have seacocks and there is a vented loop on the discharge line.

The actual Purasan installation was easy. The instructions are pretty good.

The boat was originally plumbed for a manual head that flushed directly overboard (legal, back then) so I already had thru hulls in place. I put new hardware on those the first time I hauled out.

There is no "sewage" to be seen in discharge from the Purasan or Electroscan. By law the disinfected particles must be microscopic (invisible). It looks like cloudy water.
 
I just had to manually pump out my Electro Scan to do the annual acid cleaning. I'm not sure if Vic will approve or not, but I ran two cycles without adding new waste just to make sure what I was handling was nice an safe. The smell was that of stale seawater. Not bad considering what it used to be! The color was coffee with cheap powdered creamer (that's a nasty thought). We just came back from having the boat in the crystal clear waters of the Bahamas and I've yet to see any sort of discoloration when my hold-n-treat system is running there. Granted, our discharge is under water and angled under our catamaran. I keep expecting to see something down there, but never have. Back home in the Chesapeake, the output of the Electro Scan is clearer (and probably safer) than the bay water! (sadly)
 
Hi Kurt,

No problem with running it without adding any new sewage. That's what you're supposed to do, when you're servicing it.

For general info purposes, the only time you'll ever see anything coming out of it is when the toilet is physically flushing, and for maybe 15 or so seconds afterward.
 
Thanks for the info fellas. So far we love the new toilet and Purasan. I wish my toilets in my house flushed as well as the Elegance. :)
