PURASAN to PSTEX conversion?

Thanks for the tip on loosening the lid a bit. If this were a few years ago I would probably have already ordered the new unit. I think I will try and do the modifications you mentioned 1st and see how that works.
As I mentioned the 1st few years the unit was flawless. It's definatly calcium or solution particulates and build up related.

I had all the same problems after my first winter with my hold n treat. I expect maintenance, but not this much, this soon. It's just not as reliable as it should be.
 
Ghost I'm on year 6 with mine. My installation is a bit non standard being the treatment system is higher than the waste tank it treats. I also converted the controls to Hold-N-Treat. The new unit seems to be the answer to my problems but I'm going to do the above modifications BarrenRiver suggests and see what happens. I really like Raritan products I just wish Vic William was still there. He was a straight shooter and knew his stuff!
I mean no disrespect to BarrenRiver his notes and suggestions will probably fix my problems until I let Raritan work out the bugs on the new system. Then I will clean my old PuraSan unit up and sell it for a few hundred dollars replacing it with the new redesigned unit.

That reminds me, Bill, I need to clean up my old Electro Scan and large Salt Feed Unit for sale. I almost had them sold a while back, but when I met the prospect he tried to low-ball me with a sob story. Those don't work on me :-)
 
I'm going off-topic here, but Bill will probably cut me some slack :-)

We're at a marina as a transient this weekend. They have well(s) here, but due to water quality issues have some sort of treatment system that is putting a TON of chlorine into the water (I will NOT be back-flushing my water-maker here for sure!). That got me to thinking about what's going to happen in my holding tank if the chlorine is enough to kill the aerobic bacteria I've been carefully nurturing in there for years. My system "ain't broke" and I'm not going to change, but considering I've got a HNT system with a Purasan, would it be hypothetically possible to chlorinate the holding tank to keep anaerobic bacteria away as an alternative to using aerobic additives? A Purisan unit isn't going to have an issue with chlorine like an ElectroScan would, right? I wonder what breaks waste down better, the little aerobic guys or chlorine?
 
My understanding is Chlorine disinfects which means as I take it to kill anything living.
I don't think Chlorine breaks down solids in anyway shape or form?

That's probably a good point, Bill. Like I said, I have no plans to change things, I'm just curious. I know chlorine is not good for the treatment plates in an ElectroScan, but I would think there's no issue with a Purasan considering how powerful that chemical in the treatment cartridge is. I never got a face full of it like you did, but I did get a good "whiff" of it one time in concentrated form. My lungs weren't happy.
 
It was about as pleasant as getting a face full of Bleach possibly worse.
Lucky for me none got into my eye's. But I made quite a racket getting immediatly into the shower and keeping my eyes closed.
It reminds me of an old Iron sink & toilet cleaner we used to have to use at an old house we lived in, it would kill my lungs when I would inhale some by accident. It felt like an immediate Asthma attack.

I did the basket dispenser conversion, enlarged the outlet flow now all I have to do is change the water level clip to a small adjustable valve. The unit is working as well as when it was new. I also didn't snug the lid to tight on the tablet/ solution dispenser as RiverBed suggested. The water level was repeatable and as easy to set as when I 1st purchased the PuraSan. At this point I'll see how long the 2 tablets last and how often I need to clean up everything. Looks like an improvement for my installation.
I also like the new tablets and basket over the old cartridge.

BillyIII, for your needle valve go to US Plastics and look up Item #: 22318

Glad to hear your system is working good......the thing I like about the new tablets, ... there wont be as much waste....with the old, you might not use up all 6 tablets they installed in the cartridge..and over time they became mush...with the new, they are less expensive and I don't see as much waste as with the old

Thanks guys less mush should equal less clogging. I know I never got to use the entire cartridge in the past. Plus keeping the water level in check seemed to change as the old cartridge volume got reduced.
I'll grab one of the adjustable valves by the part number you just posted ASAP.
Thanks again this was a good productive thread and for now seems to have saved me $$$'s I was ready to order the new model but I think that might not happen now. Time will tell....

Good to hear, Bill. I just started one of the old cartridges this spring and have another one to go through (once this one turns to mush). Are the new tablets the same size that I can (wearing a mask and gloves) remove the tables from the old cartridges and use them with the new basket dispenser?
 
I'm not sure Kurt my old cartridge, installed a month ago got destroyed and turned to mush. This happened during my high pressure blow-off. That's what brought me back to the Raritan site where I saw the new redesigned PuraSan unit and to the sanitation section of this board where I got educated and good answers to my questions.
