Put In Bay News

The western end by the islands is still frozen. I saw a couple 4 wheelers out on it today.

Just because you see some fools on it doesn't mean it's safe ice.

Rescue teams pulled a man from the icy water Monday night after he fell through the ice near South Bass Island.

According to Put-in-Bay Police Chief Ric Lampela, the man and his brother were both taken by Life Flight medical helicopter.

Lampela said Donald and Ronald Mickey were southeast of Green Island when they were separated by a crack in the ice and Ronald, 40, fell through. Donald reportedly walked across the ice to the South Bass Island State Park, where he broke a window in the office to call for help.

The chief said Donald was found at the state park office, and the rescue effort was launched immediately.

Put-in-Bay firefighters were taken out on the lake by ice boat captain and island resident Joe Costura. Lampela said a boat from the Coast Guard was coming to meet Costura’s when someone heard Ronald Mickey yelling.

Lampela said Ronald was conscious and talking when he was pulled from the water. He was wearing a hat with a flashlight attached, which helped rescuers locate him in the water.

“We estimate that he had been out there for a couple of hours, so he’s a lucky guy,” Lampela said.

“The ice is unsafe,” said Ottawa County Sheriff Robert Bratton. “People have to get off the ice. These guys are so lucky they’re alive.”

Bratton said the emergency call came in at 9:08 p.m. and that at least one of the brothers was taken to the Medical University of Ohio in Toledo.

Bratton said the dive team from his office joined divers from fire departments in Sandusky and Huron in the search for the men. Two Life Flight helicopters were also used, he said.
