I am looking at a boat in northern WI. I want to also have a survey of the boat's mechanicals (engines, etc). I could only find one shop who performs this service local to the listing broker. They could not get to it for 2 months.

What qual/credentials should a person have to do this type of survey? I realize that I may have to pay $ have someone brought in non-locally.

you dont' say what kind of boat... inboards, sterndrive, outboard, diesel, genset ... ??

if diesel, you need someone famliar to the type of engines in the boat... for smaller boats, sterndrive, etc... any decent mechanic shoudl be able to handle it.

I would want a person who was factory trained on the model and brand in question.

I don't think you have to use a factory certified tech, and thats not a guarantee the person will be good. When I do a (gas) engine evaluation it includes;

  • Visual inspection and photographic record
  • Review service records (when available)
  • Identification of engine systems (type of fuel system, ignition system, carb/EFI, exhaust system, ect
  • Cranking compression test (replace plugs wth new)
  • Boroscopic inspection of exhaust (when accessable)
  • Record exhaust system operating temps (manifolds, risers, elbows, collectors)
  • Connect to Self Diagnostic System (review fault and operating history)
  • Ignition scope analysis
  • Record engine vacuum, oil pressure, operating temp, sea pump pressure, charging system voltage
  • Engine oil analysis (Quinn-Cat lab)
  • Printed report with service/repair recommendations
