John, what was the carpet and binding that you used on your boat

Instabind is the binding and the Berber Marine Carpet with AquaLoc vinyl backing. Available online but there is a guy in Upper Greenwood lake that sells it for MUCH less than Harry Parker and when it is shipped to his shop the manufacturer eats the shipping.

I'll text you the guys info but for anyone else looking for a local dealer go to http://www.corinthianmarine.com/dealerLocator2.php

Mike Patino did a great job on my old boat and was very reasonable for what he did. I used the new carpet the cover the black marks left by the old carpet. I don't know the brand but it looks just like the carpet used on most Searays. If I recall I had two large sections custom cut fit and edged for about $600. Held up real well.

How many years did it take to get it done?

BTW - sometimes there is a nice bit of satisfaction doing a job yourself. I know there is for me.

I had him redo the entire boat over a winter. He redid the whole boat inside and out except the inside carpet he sent me to someone else. He came in at less than half the price of Parker and it was done on time for Spring, No complaints. I had him make floor covers for the current boat this past winter again done on time. I'm about to have him cover the filler cushion that I made for my couch. But I guess if you are in a rush and money doesn't matter then by all means do what you have to do. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking Parker He does great work I can't afford it but I would use him if I could, And He very nice as well.

What does doing it yourself have to do with Harry's prices Dave?

Mike asked me about the stuff I used on my boat.

"guy in Upper Greenwood lake that sells it for MUCH less than Harry Parker"
I guess when I read this I assumed you where looking for someone cheaper than Harry. I didn't realize the was a DIY project I'm not good with a sewing machine so it not something I would consider.

The raw carpet is what I was talking about Dave when referencing the UGL vs HP source.

Also, when using Instabind you don't use a sewing machine. The stuff goes on using nothing more than a hot glue gun. I found it extremely easy to work with and it's held up very well over the last few seasons.

Very interesting I thought all carpet binding was stitched. It's something to consider next time. Last time I was having so much work done it was just easy to say do the outside carpet as well and the price was right.

It's really never been about price for me Dave. I like learning new things and seeing just how much I can do myself. As I mentioned above the satisfaction of doing a job myself is priceless.

I can understand that but for me if you can do it with power tools than it's not a job for me. I got great satisfaction building the filler cushion for my coach but it come to covering the cushion that a job for a pro. Maybe someday when I have more time to experiment I will try such projects as carpeting.

John thanks for the leads. I have been considering things like this and Instabind sounds like a good product. At some point we have to install new carpeting inside Freedom. One of the options I have been considering is taking a rabbit out of the hatches so that the carpet can fold down into the gap created. I saw this used on a 48 LRC and it was a very smooth installation that did not have corners and edges popping up.

Your welcome Dan.

I really like the stuff. I'll admit I have 2 spots where the binding needs to be redone, seems I didn't use enough hot glue. The good news is the repair is a 10 minute job and it will look perfect again. We have 2 very hard seasons on the carpet and I expect to get many more.

We used the marine instabind for the cockpit carpets since the edges get wet when it rains and they really do hold up as claimed. No mold or rot at all.

We used the standard instabind for the bridge carpets. From the carpet scraps I made several doormats using the rope binding and they really look nice. Very nautical.

Looks like you did a good job. I would never think the edge was hot glued on.
