Hi all,

I'm soon going to have a survey done on a 1980 33 Carver Mariner - keeping my fingers crossed.

Until I can arrange that, I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions ....

1 - Where is the water tank located? I can see the filler on the port side by the galley, but I wasn't able to locate the tank!

2 - There seems to be two waste holding tanks even though there is only one head? I'm guessing there's some kind of valve to turn when one is full so the other one is used? Is that correct?

I'm sure these questions will be answered when we have it surveyed, but since we can't get that done for 2 weeks or so I was hoping someone here could help out.

Thanks!

I'm thinking that one of those waste tanks is actually a water tank. Carver sometimes back then put in the same sized tanks next to each other to balance the boat out.

Thanks RamSport - I thought so too, but there are waste 'caps' to pump-out the waste on both sides of the transom. That's why I was thinking they both must be for waste.

That would be odd...2 tanks and one head. Did you look under the dinette seats for the water tank?

One of the waste tanks may actually be a "grey water" tank to catch sink or shower water. Some fresh water lakes require this set up. To find the water tank, try to follow the hose from the fill cap. If you still can't find it, fill the tank until it squirts out the vent and try to follow the vent line to the tank.

Okay....here's the scoop...right from Carver...The fuel tank is centered in the bilge running fore to aft. There are tanks on either side of the fuel tank...those are the water tanks (2 for balance). They are tied together with a hose at the bottom so when you fill thru the deck fitting...both tanks fill. I hope this helps!

Thanks RamSport - how did you get that info? I went to look the boat over again today - engine survey will happen tomorrow, hull survey early next week - and I did find the (or a) water tank. On the dinette settee, closest to the galley there's a drawer for storing 'stuff'. When I pulled it all the way out I could see the water holding tank. Or, maybe I was just seeing one of them? When I look into the engine compartment I can clearly see the gas tank, but there are no other tanks visible other than the waste tanks. They are located as far astern as possible one on either side of the transom. I really think they're both waste tanks for the head, as I tested the sinks in the galley and the head, as well as the shower and I can clearly see where they're discharged overboard. It gets curiouser and curiouser. The current owner has had the boat for about a year or so and really doesn't know a whole lot about it. He's only used it 2 or 3 times and wants to sell it because he's just not interested in it. I tried asking him various questions but he doesn't really seem to know how most of the stuff works!

I hope you surveys both go well...the 33 Mariner is a fantastic livable boat. It rides decently, is nice and wide, and has fantastic side decks. I work for a Carver dealer here in Ohio...for 27 years now. They may have done the same thing with waste tanks as they did with the water tanks...saddle the fuel tank...The guy at Carver indicated that the water tanks were in the salon area of the bilge, under the floor.

One nice thing about old Carvers is that they have a lot of extra room under things in order to put in extra tankage. When the 3396 was built sanitation rules were a lot less stringent than they are now, or at least they were a lot less enforced. So it was okay to have a 9.5 gallon Traveler toilet in there, or maybe a 20 gal holding tank...

Today, especially if you use your boat in a backwater area like I do, or go on extended cruises far from home up rivers and canals, its nice to have the extra tankage - my 2896 now sports a 35 gal waste tank under the circular dinette along with the 9.5 gallon Traveler head, for a total of 44.5 gallons! So when I say my boat can take a lot of $h!t, I'm SERIOUS :) !!!

So perhaps those extra tanks were added later. If the job was done right, they will come in very handy in the future!!!

PS - Ram, thanks for the research
PPS - 32carv, good point about Gray water, yet another thing we have to worry about!!!
